After reading all the discussions about ram amount, I'm just curious how many browser tabs people keep open at a time during a typical day.

The ones who have actually used them personally say 8 is enough for most people.

Another very expensive problem with today's Apple. Prior to 2016, you could buy a computer and later upgrade it by adding more RAM or storage later once your needs change. My daily driver is a mid 2012 MBPro. I've doubled the RAM and added a SSD over the years.

Now, everything is soldered, so upgrades are impossible. To get 16 or 32 MB of RAM or a bigger SSD, you need to pay 3 times the price up front of what upgrades would cost for the same configuration, even if you don't realize the need now.

No thanks, Apple.

I use heavy apps like Luminar and Tradestation, they perform better at 16GB and i7(may be m1 here... ). For normal usage, 8GB is very good.

My IMHO is to use less memory you have to write your code more efficient, load less libraries and other crap.
But no one bothers about that because RAM is cheap.
Do you think companies will invest in saving RAM just to satisfy people with 8Gb, unlikely. Because as history shows RAM increases with time and every new machine will have more.
Well.... probably apple will still be milking with 8Gb RAM devices Good luck in trying that out.

People have different needs. Not everyone has 100+ tabs open or work with pro apps.

Exactly. No one makes code as efficient as it can possible be anymore. Hardware is cheap. Engineers are not

The $799 mini with 16GB at MicroCenter is a better buy IMO.

Lol. All the ram talk is insane. Tech reviewers who say 8gb is plenty don't hang on to their machines for longer than 1-2 years, on the other hand we consumers do (as much as 10 years or more sometimes.) Is 8gb enough? Of course it is, but are you buying it for today or for next 5-10 years. What's enough today is not enough down the road when machine gets old and app requirements increases. This is your chance to buy something very powerful and future proof, if you go 16gb route. It will still be powerful at 8gb but probably not future proof.

There is one more thing to this: it's unified ram so if you get more ram, more ram will be available to both cpu and gpu, you will see much bigger boost in performance for gpu intensive tasks such as rendering.

I've been using it for music production and it's working fine for me. I'm only using about 5+ tracks with multiple fx on all tracks. I would definitely recommend 16gb for anybody doing anything substantial for every day work. My app (Studio One) is not even native yet and it runs really smooth. YMMV

Also, USB 3 is a little wonky right now and my external SSD is not getting full speed. Just something to think about.

The machine pretty much silent even under full load. Awesome!
