8/256 config Available for 599 from places like Costco right now. I know I'll get flamed but good deal or not, paying an extra $200 for an additional 8gb ram is beyond me. Apple tax at its best.

Yeah, iirc you can't upgrade the RAM in these any more, it's a MacBook without a monitor.

I know memory isn't upgradable but do these use pcie ssd that is upgradable or is this forever to have 256GB solder in? Kinda a dumb design decision if that's soldered in since there is obviously room for it.

Yes, it's ridiculous.

My 16GB M1 Air runs circles around my 32GB MacBook Pro, so I would look at this more as a historically $2400+ MacOS computer for $800. Spend $200-300 on an external NVMe enclosure and hard drive and you've got a beast of a machine.

You cannot upgrade the internals, but you can plug in an external drive.

Awe that sucks, it's all made this way for them to sell the most expensive model. I bet it cost pennies to make that a m2 slot instead of soldering. this is 2021 why is 256gb even a std? it's like selling a 16GB iPhone today.

Similar to how theaters don't make (much) money from the tickets sales. They make money off the popcorns and drinks. Apple doesn't make much money off the base model of their computers. The real profit comes from the add on and upgrades. That's why they solder the inside to make self upgrade impossible and keep reducing the ports.

It's a business design decision: Call it price discrimination or planned obsolescence (it's both)

Has anyone actually figured out how to put windows 10 on the M1 chip Macs? I have an older Mac and I like how I can use boot camp and use windows if I need to run a program that specific to windows but I don't think that's something I can do with the new arm based macs.

You can install the ARM version of Windows 10 using Parallels.
This site has a good step by step guide:

Write amplification on M1 devices with low RAM is a known issue due to swap disk. You're not getting flamed, but low price is why the deal is posted. Lowest price according to AppleInsider [appleinsider.com].
