This deal worked for me, but I had a terrible time getting Alexa to order the right thing. I wanted a specific book from a series, and Alexa tried to order the entire series for like $60 and then other random books with titles that were close, but definitely not the right book.

I looked the book up on Amazon on my computer and looked at the URL to see the item ID (looks like "B00514HX3F"). Then I said "Alexa, order B00514HX3F". I doubted whether it would work, but it did! Alexa read off the correct title of the book, indicated that the $5 promo had been applied, and confirmed that I wanted to order it.

Hope that helps anyone who might want to use this promo, but is struggling to get Alexa to cooperate.
Credit is applied at the time you order. In other words, the purchase is discounted by $5. I just ordered a book that is normally $7.29 and it was $2.29; when you order the book, Alexa will state the adjusted price and inform you that the $5 credit was applied before you confirm the purchase.
Here's how you check if the credit applies BEFORE buying!

On any device (including the Alexa app), say this phrase:

She should respond with "(Your book's title) by (your book's author). The Kindle ebook is (price) after a $5.00 Alexa-exclusive ebook credit. Would you like to buy it?"

I've tested a few different books on Echo Dot 3, Echo Show, Echo Show 5, and my Alexa app. This should be foolproof!

Does the credit apply to the initial Alexa order, or do you order a book through Alexa and then get a credit for your next purchase?

Anyone have a recommendation for a good/best Chinese e-cookbook? Traditional, even "westernized" stuff?

Thanks

The book I personally use most is Quick and Easy Chinese by Nancie McDermott. Good variety and taste for the recipes I've tried. I have the physical copy but I see there is an e-version. I grew up eating traditional Chinese dishes from my Chinese mother, but I think the included recipes would appeal to a wide range of palates.

Be careful. The book must be sold by Amazon for this credit to apply.
