I just picked up the Borderlands 3 from BestBuy deal with Steelbook and opened it yesterday. I couldn't get to play it though- and now this deal comes through.

The main issues that persist today with this game only affect a small minority of players (probably <10% based on achievement data, maybe even <5%) who are interested in endgame content like item farming, highest-level mayhem play, and finding "broken" builds. Head over to r/Borderlands3 if you want full details on those.
For the rest of us casual gamers who will play through the campaign once (maybe twice), do some couch co-op with friends, and check out the DLCs that look fun, BL3 is an improvement over previous games in the series in almost every way except the primary villain. The weapon feel and variety are great, the skill trees are fun, and performance/visuals are impressive on latest gen consoles. The overall writing is still up and down, same as previous installments.
Regarding the season pass: this includes the first one, which has four standalone story DLCs and is probably what casual players want. The second season pass is more focused on hardcore players (raid boss, behind the scenes content, vault cards for unique items, only one story DLC), so I don't think it's a big deal for most people.
I paid $100 in MS Rewards credits for this version (digital) at launch, and I have more than gotten my money's worth with two DLCs still to go.
It's a great game and an improvement of the series in almost every way so I don't know why you think that's a con.
As someone who put several hundred hours into 2 and didn't think the presequel was that bad, my biggest issue with the game is that it doesn't function. I own a standard PS4, so maybe that's my issue, but it is laggy, slow, buggy, and you can't even traverse menus without massive lag and delays. It's a steaming pile of garbage as far as I'm concerned and practically unplayable. If you have a PS5 or a series X maybe your experience was better, but I don't and they sold me a PS4 copy so...
