Blade choice seems to be more important. Very aggressive blades in cutting wood might be better at a lower speed setting, while if cutting ferrous metal (much like drilling), such as nails and screws, higher speeds will smoke the cheaper blades a lot faster.
On the other hand, a multi speed gearbox is not imperative to have and from experience, that multi-speed switch and the trigger are the first replaceable parts to wear out. For drywall and dusty applications that infiltrate the multi-speed switch on the XR, this single speed gearbox Atomic works well.... while the trigger is variable speed.
For the average homeowner, it probably does not matter... both tools are brushless and the included compact, multi function, 2 speed gearbox Atomic hammer drill, straight drill, driver with an adjustable clutch is a solid, versatile tool. You can tell when you just pick it up that it is not a toy. While we have most of the DeWalt brand tools, I really like this drill for it's versatility over all of the other small DeWalt 20v drills.
