I have had this for a year now and had 3 incidents of complete OS corruption. I keep backup images updated regularly but it is frustrating. Most recently I did lose a good chunk of data due the corruption happening in between backups. Food for thought.

MX 500 was good a couple of years ago but SK Hynix S31 is faster and higher TBW.

I have the S31 nvme version and it's awesome. But I bet you that if you were blind testing two different systems between an MX500 and the sk hynix you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. But I also have several MX500s and I think they're perfect. Crucial makes really solid stellar products with very good warranties. I don't know what the sk Hynix warranty is all about

I would suggest get an NVMe if you are just starting out. They cost a bit more may be $20-40 more , but the speed will be 3-5x of a SATA SSD.

The speed is the rated speed, you may not necessarily see the benefit while playing a game, but there is potential of reduced load times, faster installs etc. plus it is becoming the new norm/latest and greatest.

For gaming, you don't need a M.2. digital foundry has done tests and the load times averaged the same. it's best to save the money and go with the 2.5 form factor IMO.

Just a little heads up, companies like phison are warning of an impending Solid state drive shortage too. The microcontrollers they use are beginning to get affected as well. Also chia mining is becoming a big thing, which is crypto mining with drives.

If your in need, now should probably be the time to buy regardless if they are on sale or not.

Except the fact the consumer drives are already suffering shortages due to chia mining as well as global constraints, are going to be rising by 10% by next quarter and are predicted to continue to be short and rising in price through 2022.

Have 1, I had to upgrade the firmware and no issue so far . Bought years back.
Mx500 is a good sata 3 ssd.

having 3 of hynix 1tb sata 3 ssd , bought $80 each. No need extra sata ssd😆

mining is crashing, and chia is a pre-mined scam, I doubt all these predictions will come true

Hmm, that honestly just sounds like a bad drive. I've got 3 MX500 drives that have all been working perfectly for a while now, and I've even got an old M500 from 2013 that's still going strong.
