My $5 thermometer and my thermopen always give the same reading. Hell my espresso thermometer gives the same readings.
bad example.

is this the trusty corolla that refuses to die? or the Rolls Royce that's opulent for the sake of opulence?

I have the MK4 after having several no-brand and some better brand thermometers. I can toss them all and keep this, because it'll last longer, and will be accurate.
It's got a lot of nice to have features. If I'm poking 5-6 pieces of meat, waiting 2-3 seconds adds up when I don't want to keep the lid open very long. But what I really love about it is the big numbers on the screen, they rotate how you are holding it, and they also light up at night. It's got a magnet so I can stick it on the fridge when I'm not using it. It has a lot of nice to have things in addition to being more accurate or faster than a cheaper one. If someone is only grilling or checking meat temps once in a blue moon, probably not worth it. For some though, those little features are absolutely worth $70 over the course of 5+ years.

Picked up one of these during the last slickdeal for the same price. I've been cooking a lot more, and I was sick of waiting 10-15 seconds using the cheap Target one I had. The readings between the two are pretty much exactly the same, but the Thermapen gets a reading in like 2-3 seconds. The convenience is absolutely worth it for me. I also like the QOL features like auto-turnoff and flipping the orientation of the screen as I move it around.

A good thermometer is one of those things that takes your meat-cooking to the next level. I don't regret buying this.

I bought one on Amazon a few weeks ago at this price and was scammed. They sent a thermapro pen. The whole intention was to scam me, so I wasn't able to get my money back. Really sucks for me that I blew my whole budget on a fake.
They don't sell their items on Amazon pal. So "they" didn't send you the wrong item. And I've never known someone not to be able to get their money back from an Amazon purchase. Methinks you're trying to bad mouth this thermometer. Why?

For a smoker, get the kind that sits outside the smoker and has a few probes that connect via wire. Much better for keeping an eye on temps over several hours and getting the meat out at just the right time. Bluetooth and wifi are common features on them that are definitely not necessary, but definitely nice to have.

Anyone have experience buying from basterin.com? Found it for $54 with a quick google search.

Btw, I bought one on sale a few months ago and love it! I'm thinking about buying another one as a gift 😁
Not the same product! That looks like the thermapen classic and not the mk4.

I don't know why I got down voted. I never said thermoworks sold me the item. I never said anything about the product either. I really wanted the right product. If anything, I was helping promote to buy from their website, telling people they don't sell on Amazon, so they also don't get scammed.

The only video I found on YouTube of someone repairing the thermapen was their older version that uses lithium batteries (looks like a watch sized). On google, same thing, always issues with their older version that uses 2032 coin batteries. One review even mentioned how the coin battery being low voltage was the cause of the older thermapen intermittently turning on/off. Also, coin batteries expire, and cheap ones run out much quicker than expected. This newer version has been out for a long time and seems to be durable and uses AAA. If a product has been out since September 2015 shows no google results of mass failures I'm confident.
They did make the MK4's hub better. It's IP67 rated to be submersible, but is likely still not entirely impervious to intrusion over time due to its design (thermoworks still recommends keeping the hub area clean to avoid the problem in their MK4 troubleshooting guide).

You are right, though. Some of the videos and posts i've come across previously have gone by the wayside, so it's likely not an issue that the MK4 experiences to any significant degree.

Wish this had a nice high power magnet embedded into the frame so I could stick it on the fridge, on a outdoor cabinet, on my bum, et al.

You can just buy the silicone sleeve. It has a magnet and it also glows at night.

I got this deal when it was on sale for the last time here for the same price. Really happy so far. No overcooked steaks anymore.

If your bum is magnetized, you probably have more immediate things to think about. Wink

Good catch! The classic is $83 (not on sale) on the ThermoWorks website, so basterin.com ($54) is about 35% off.

Is there much difference between the classic and Mk4??

I may need to look into it finally as I grill 5 days out of 7. Gas and Charcoal, but Charcoal preferred. I have literally used every single cheap thermometer out there that Amazon can offer. I also have the nice expensive digital ones, from the ones with their own two devices, to bluetooth, to the weber app ones.

After trying what seems like 30 different types, I have settled on one for the last 3 years now that has been instant, reliable, and dead on every time (no worry, I still been testing others over that time frame). Sure, the guys here owning one of these will tell me I don't know wtf I am talking about. Fine. Money wasn't the issue, testing different thermometers was the challenge.

I will purchase one of these, maybe this deal even. Just so I can say I have the golden standard everyone here is raving about. For the rest here reading and wondering why we would want to spend all this money on this I will offer you, what I consider the golden standard of made in china cheapos suggested by a guy that has spent well over $500+ on such a silly, yet essential tool for the sake of trying them all: https://www.amazon.com/Thermomete...00S93EQUK/ . Give the Alpha Griller a spin. I have the original from many years back, they seem to have changed names, but this is the ultimate cheap thermometer in my book. I am still surprised it works without missing a beat or asking for a battery. 3 years 5 months is what Amazon tells me was the date of purchase. How is this thing still going on such a daily use? I may have to open it and check for a Chinese nuclear reactor.

Roast me, grill me, but please do reverse sear me for this post if you must. Just some friendly advise from a grill fanatic who obsessed over thermometers way more then he should. Don't FIRE me if it doesn't work out for you, it is a cheap tool after all, but mine has been solid.

I've bought probably a dozen of these through the years for friends and family after getting sick and tired of answering 'how long did you cook it for?' 'I cooked it to 125'f'.

/r
I don't understand the mindset of people (if they are trying to cook well) who will use a $5 thermometer to cook hundreds of dollars of food. This is a rock solid tool - I've been through so many cheap thermometers that look good when you first get them, but after a few high temp cooks and cleaning etc, they lose precision. There's a reason why if you go to BBQ competitions / watch cooking shows in professional kitchens / candy making etc etc they all use this tool. I like my steak at 125' and my wife likes hers at 143'. It's perfect every time. Salmon, 125'f... etc. And 130' is overdone. For my buddy's 40th, we got cocky enough with ours to finally tackle the big daddy - Wagu steaks. Had about $400 of steaks on the big green egg and certainly weren't going to mess around with a $5 thermometer. Ok.. time for my meds, hey, and you kids, get off my lawn!

Better deal:

https://amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08BLMRK1D

$12 and change, accurate to my non-digital, and takes just a couple seconds to get a read also.
