I had a Makita 12v for about 20+ years that I got when I bought my first house. I used it constantly and never thought about replacing it as it was "good enough" to get the job at hand done. I always had a corded drill as backup for the tougher jobs. It was a good, reliable cordless drill.
About a year before my Makita finally broke (about two years ago, RIP), I was helping out a friend and picked up his Dewalt. My initial reaction was "where is the cord?". Suddenly my darling Makita, and the good times we had shared, had lost it's shine.
So when my Makita finally died, instead of trying to fix it, I got a Dewalt MAX and have been amazed about how much better the newer cordless drills are. Literally a night-n-day difference for me, and I'm able to do things with it that I would leave to my plug-in hand drill.
So if you are debating spending the $100-200 for a new cordless drill to replace your 20 year old one that still works, but are hesitant because it still works: Let me push you over the edge and say just do it. You won't regret it the first few times you use it. And by the 3rd or 4th time, you will be wondering why you didn't do it sooner.
Edit: I did buy the 20v MAX XR hammer-drill/driver, which is probably more substantial than this compact listed. But I'm guessing this compact is still a huge improvement over good quality cordless from 20+ years ago.
