Lots of counterfeits out there. Would not buy from anyone but a licensed retailer at this time.

Because of cell phone cameras probably. There's not a huge market for desktop cameras anymore as most laptops come with one.

Newegg has the C920e for $55. This is the same webcam as the c920s but just under their business line.

If the webcam lens is good enough, and electronics support whatever resolution you need (1080p) .. well why would they update it?, My canon lenses are 10+ years old and still take excellent pictures.
Zoom doesn't support 4K video conference streams as far as I know.

Disagree. An example: A GoPro9's 1080p video quality looks leagues better than a GoPro4's 1080p video quality. We have had tons of camera lens improvements over the years yet these companies refuse to pass the technology (and reduced cost) down to the webcam segment..

C920, C920e, C922: They all use the identical optics and software

And, yeah, the technology is almost a decade old. But it's still very good for what it is. And, as the sheer hideousness of most cheap knockoffs demonstrates, Logitech designed things right in the first place.

A) Most webcames built into laptops are crap
B) Logitech can't make enough of these to meet demand, and it has been that way for a year, as the world has mostly gone to working at home and video conferencing.

There's a huge market right now. But the C920/920e//922 is good enough for 99.99% of the people who are using it.

There are better webcams out there, but not at a comparable price.

Do these Logitech cams make you install additional software (other than drivers) to work? My employer has our PCs locked down so we can't install unapproved applications.

They will work without any additional software. But you won't be able to do certain adjustments without the Logitech middleware. (E.g. you can't change the effective zoom/pan, etc.)

The sad part is that third party options are even worse. There are a TON of "1080p" generic webcams on Amazon that are in the $20-40 range but they all use the same shitty little 2 megapixel sensor when even the low end, budget logitech webcams use a 3mpx sensor for a 720p camera. It's funny because they all just copy the logitech design to get that C9xx look as well.

Here's the thing though, the C920 still looks great if you have the proper lighting. That is honestly the biggest problem that most people have. If you want to look like a pro then you'll need to drop another $20-50+ on a ring light or even more on big studio lights to light up your face and everything else evenly. Most streaming and conferencing services can't even match the quality of the webcam so there really has been no need.
