This deal is available at any Makita dealer, not just Home Depot.

Curious if anyone has this mower though. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger. The batteries and dual charger plus the mower make this a pretty great deal. Just know that Makita is moving towards a 20V platform (instead of 18V). If this was your first Makita purchase I'd wait for the new line of tools.

correct. even amazon has it for $399.

However I googled all over and can't find a single thing on makita ditching their long-running 18v system for a 20v system. What's your source for that info?

Makita does have a new 40v system but they aren't "moving towards it", they now have 3 systems 40/18/12v. It's possible they'll have a mower next year with the 40v system to compete with ego/greenworks etc with their 56v/80v mowers but if you get this mower I don't think you'll need to worry about being able to get replacement 18v batteries for quite some time......

?? I never said they were ditching the 18V. But all their new tool lines with innovations will definitely be 40V. I stand by my comment that if this is your first makita purchase, go with the newer batteries. Buying the 18V batteries - you're signing yourself up to needing adapters later on.

I linked to Makita's PDF flyer. Dont know why it throws that error. I added the Amazon link in the posting. Reviews look good. I just picked one up at HD B&M.

I think the difference between 18v and 20v is marketing. Same number of cells in series, just max vs nominal?

18V seems kind of weak for a lawn mower, though they say its 2x18V = 36V

Is this it at Home Depot? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Makit.../314796239

Comes with 4 batteries. Note that this does not appear to be self-propelled.

I bought this a week ago at $499 at HD and got the price adjustment to $399 yesterday. It's a good mower, not self propelled, but as easy to manuever as my old Honda 21" self propelled mower. No regrets so far, especially for someone firmly in the Makita ecosystem.

You said "t Makita is moving towards a 20V platform (instead of 18V)" which implies the 18v is history. Why maintain two systems with only 2v difference?

" you're signing yourself up to needing adapters later on."

Again they are not ditching the 18v system. They now have three systems 40v/18v/12v. Of the three the 18v is the biggest system You'll be able to get 18v batteries a decade from now as you could get them a 15 years ago. You currently can't buy a 40v mower. I'm sure there will be one next year or the year after but it's like saying don't buy the $400 Nvidia 3070 today as there will be a 4070 next year.

Makita will continue to invest heavily in LXT, and there is a tremendous roadmap of new LXT products in the pipeline for trade users in all segments. The LXT Advantage seamlessly utilises a single battery across hundreds of products, with the ability of added power by using two 18 volt batteries in select products with X2. This is a simple concept that has revolutionised how work is done on job sites.

The Volts is not a big deal as it's their X2 system giving 36v comparable to all the 40v mowers on the market (worx etc)

What's low is the aH/amp hours. The "aH" is basically how much energy the battery stores. A 4aH battery can deliver 1 amp of power for four hours.

Even smaller mowers like their 17" ship with their 5ah batteries but this deal only has 4ah batteries.

Bigger blade, smaller batteries can not be great combination. But don't get me wrong this is still a really really good deal as the four genuine 18v makita batteries and a charger would cost you a significant fraction of the price but just make sure if you are comparing against other makita mowers with 5ah batteries that you aren't comparing "apples and oranges".

And as someone pointed put above there is a new 40v system that may be able to do a mower like this with one battery in the future. So if you don't need it now and can wait a year or two it might be better to wait for a 40v version of this if you want to standardize on the new 40v system (they already have weed eaters/string trimmers with the 40v system).

The steel deck is nice.

Be wary about electric lawn power power though.

This is a good read:

http://www.stevepake.com/life/201...horsepower

I have a 40v Greenworks. Its just...OK. My biggest peeve with it is that it leaves overly tall weeds just bent over...not cut.

I have a very small area to mow so its 'good enough'. If I had a real yard, I'd buck up and get a top rated mower like the Ego.

I exchanged the one I bought at HD B&M because the "mode" switch didnt seem to do anything between normal and silence mode. RPMs seems the same, noise the same. The replacement behaved exactly the same. I suspect it only matters if the motor is under load and is cutting thick grass but the manual doesnt mention it. Seems like they should describe this feature better if they don't want more returns!
