Are these novels stand alone, or should one strive to read them in order?

This one does a nice job of standing on its own. Some of the humor might miss without broader context, but overall it's still highly enjoyable.

Source - I have given this book to people with no prior knowledge.

Been reading the series straight through release order over last 2 years. This one stands on its own and is one of my favorites. Other books in the series have recurring characters and settings.

All of the novels are standalone but there are repeat characters that create multi-book story arcs (The Watch, the witches, rincewind, etc). You can find reading orders for these with a quick Google.

I would actually recommend not reading them in order. There are a few series within the series that follow recurring characters and would benefit from more or less reading them in order just to see how the characters progress, but I had read about 10 of the books before I ever got around to the first two, and honestly, if I had started with those I probably wouldn't have continued with the series. The first ones are more parodies of traditional fantasy while most of the Discworld books after the first few are more of a satire of our world in a fantasy setting. I haven't read this one (yet), but I believe it's entirely standalone and it's one that a lot of people rank pretty high.

This is often recommended as the best entry into the series.

For all y'all out there --- I own this is in paperback, and I'm buying it on the Kindle version for $2 to reread.

If y'all don't own it, it's $2. You will not find a better laugh to dollar ratio anywhere in this universe. Just buy it. Pratchett is a master. His world is alive. There is not a better comedic series in fiction, period. Hell, you could argue there's not a better series in fiction, period, but I'm not here to start a fight.

I think it's one of the best standalone, but if you're allowed context from other novels and backstory and stuff, something like Night Watch or Carpe Jugulum might beat it.

Still I think it's a must read, and if you like that you're going to love the rest of Discworld.
