CA requires a back-up battery because of wild fires. If you need to evacuate quickly, you'll want to use your car. Some people may only have an accessible car in the garage but if the power is out, how will they open the garage open? Yes, there's the emergency cord to manually open and close the door. But not many know about it, know how to operate it or even have the strength to operate it. Imagine your elderly parents in a panic trying to evacuate quickly and but don't have arm strength to pull on the emergency cord or not tall enough or the car is in the way of getting access to it. Then the real panic and irrational thinking starts to set in. But if the garage door can operate with just a backup battery in case of emergency, that's a great peace of mind to have for a little extra $. CA firefighters have found people who died in their garage trying to get out, especially the elderly. Hence the CA law requires backup battery.

Until your power goes out. It's my main entrance to my house. Power goes off while I am not there it gets tricky. It's happened more than once here in the midwest

I think they're being technically proper is all it is: horsepower is always an equivalency measurement. The power of motor "X" is equivalent to "Y" horsepower - which is a measurement devised by James Watt to compare steam engines to work previously done by horses.

It look like you could to me. I couldn't select this opener when going through the services page, so I bought the $87 service standalone as if I already had my opener already to-be-installed. I had to buy the opener in a separate transaction. I went with HD anyways, since Amazon's listing says no returns. I just give up a few % in rewards.

Bought the similar model few year ago when it is on sale in Lowes. Pretty easy to install. It is very quiet compared to my old craft man. Specially, this use rubber belt instead of bicycle chain. I guess that is make this opener have less noise.

Had been needing to use my Amex HD offer so this was perfect since I also wanted a new opener. Decided against the 87 home depot install after finally figuring it out. Got a local company to do it for 120 that is very well regarded locally and I was more comfortable for 33 more bucks having them do it rather than whatever cut rate contractor HD was probably having do it for 87.

For those who cannot get the 87 to come up on HD site...on the home I clicked "Installation and Services" near the top, then "Garage Door", then I clicked "Get a Quote", then I clicked "I already have a garage door opener I bought at Home Depot" and it then offered me the 87 bucks price.

I made the switch from a chain opener when I replaced my door a few years back and LOVE it. I've never had to use the battery backup but in years prior had a need to a few times. I installed by myself and it wasn't much fun. Paying $87 for someone to install it would have been worth it. lol

1 1/4 HP is way more than I need but it has all the features I wanted so I pulled the trigger. Got 2 and going to try to do the install myself from the youtube video posted here
