Looks like a good deal, I'm not using bladehq anymore after their data breach a couple of months ago, I don't feel they did a very good job of informing or offering help/solutions. Just an FYI if you've never bought from them before, I would want to be informed. The info isn't on the website that I saw, but if you google bladehq databreach there is a lot of info.
I am thrilled and surprised this thread is full of positive conversation, and not "what can this do that my five dollar Ozark Trail can't."
I like Benchmade, and if I had spare knife money right now, I'd be tempted. Thanks, OP.
There was a time when I babied my knives because I didn't want to scratch them up but now I like to buy my cake and get fat on it too lol. But yes I know people who baby their knives. not unlike people who buy trucks and/or mod them to go off road and it never touches mud, tows, or the bed is never loaded.
If I like one that much I am afraid to use it, I buy an extra to be a safe queen.
I like the Bugout but prefer the slightly larger Bailout. I know some will not like the tanto blade shape though.

I'm a huge knife guy, and these are right up there with in terms of quality. I've had several BMs over the years, and never had an Omega spring break, or any other issues with them. You can send it back to BM for a sharpening and a tune up as well.
Check out knife_swap on reddit as well.
Yes, I am sure it happens, but not to me so far. I rotate a bunch of knives now but carried a Pardue for 3-4 years with heavy daily use and the spring is still functioning on that one.
Can someone explain in layman's terms (to someone who really wants to learn) how knife's derive their value and why this Benchmade is good for the $200 price tag? I'm a hobbyist of many types so I can appreciate the nuances!

Benchmade offers great warranty service, such as lifetime blade sharpening, $30-40 blade replacement, free spring replacement, etc. These services are usually not available with other brands. The steel they use is decent to excellent and the knives themselves have excellent utility. So as long as the knife is not lost/stolen, Benchmade has been known to replace completely mangled knives for free.
On a side note, these discounted prices are low enough where one could purchase the knife, try it out, and then resell the knife on Reddit for very little to no loss. I own a 940 and just bought a 945 to try out the smaller form factor with little risk of money lost.

Benchmades are admittedly expensive in their own respective corner, but for these high prices you are paying for the design and engineering, quality manufacturing, decent blade steels (most Benchmades start with S30v now, and yes, you can buy $50 S30v knives but it's still not super common in knives under $100) and a terrific warranty. Oh, and part of that cost is probably at least partially paying for American parts and labor.
I have knives from many manufacturers but Benchmade really seems to outshine most of them. Broke a pocket clip? Contact them, they'll send you one. Other issues? Fill out the form and send it in for free warranty service. Out of warranty repairs and complete blade replacements are also relatively cheap when/if needed.
The omega springs are often cited as a weakness with the Axis lock design - you can buy aftermarkets, and it is something that concerns me, but I have never had one fail and have never babied the handful of Benchmades that I own.
There ARE cheaper manufacturers out there producing high quality blades with great materials (WE knife, Kizer, and Civivi come to mind) but the majority of them will also be made in China or have some other 'gotcha' (and not to say they are bad, I have handled some Civivis and couldn't believe they were like $40).

That 945 seems like a killer deal. I've never owned a 940 but am thinking about trying the 945 for the exact reasons you mention.

Its analogous to buying a Honda vs an Acura. sure you can find quality knives for lower prices. To give you a background, the $200 Bugout referenced has been upgraded from their "standard" model. The standard model which is normally $150 has polymer handle that some criticize for being able to flex. and the steel S30v has good edge retention and corrosion resistance. The upgraded model references has carbon fiber scales so its got some flair, and more rigidity. The steel has also been upgraded. You get these upgrades for $50 more. So if you were planning on upgrading the scales you may as well get the $200 Bugout. As a reference the $200 Bugout is normally $255

Kind of a benchmade homer here. I have the 940/945/535/533 and gravitate towards the 533 as my EDC. I do really like the 945, but compared to the 533 it's quite a bit heavier and thicker feeling in the pocket. I use my knives for light tasks, so the possible flex with the grivory handles hasn't been a problem for me.
The urge to buy the 535-3 is strong, but can't pull the trigger since I already have the base 535. Wish they had the bailout (537) part of this deal...

As others have pointed out, this is not different than other consumer products. Why does one set of headphones cost $200 and another $10? A bit of it is that you're paying for a brand name, a bit of it is more premium materials, and a bit of it is overall higher costs to manufacture these knives in the US.
Carbon Fiber, plus S90V steel, plus a premium brand name == $200. Compared to others, even like the US made Spyderco knives, this is a premium price. But is it worth it? Only you can answer that.
Edit: their warranty is good and, for me at least, I've not had any problems with the Omega spring. Probably will have cursed myself now by saying that.

The materials (carbon Fibre and steel used in the blade) steel is not cheap. Good steel at least isn't cheap.
Design and R&d (surprising amount goes in r&d, that's why knockoffs are cheaper)
Their very well renowned customer service. I'd argue top 5 best companies to deal with.
Made in America, with American wages using American materials
Small high quality parts aren't cheap to make.
And a small part is definitely brand value. If you sell cheap stuff you're seen as a cheap brand. Its why MK bags are seen as cheap now since they had so many sales. It damaged their brand identity.
