I got both a year and half ago. The 2DS is no joke and I would take it over the new 3DS XL, which would be more than double the price. It lacks 3D screen, two shoulder buttons, 2nd joystick nub (which is often unusable), and newer CPU, but plays 99.9% of the games well and without worry. This includes all DS and most 3DS games, NES and GBA virtual console. Only things it can't play are a few games like Xenoblade, Binding of Isaac, and SNES virtual console.

EDIT: 2DS vs new 3DS XL differences also include:
- mono speaker vs stereo speakers
- easy to access full size SD slot vs hard to access micro SD slot
- smaller, sharper screens vs larger blockier screens (effectively same resolution...new 3DS XL has double horizontal resolution on top screen for 3D)
- no NFC/Amiibo vs built in Amiibo reader
- sleep slide switch vs sleep by closing clamshell

But again, this 2DS is great to natively play back library of thousands of DS and 3DS games, virtual console, or hacks to play even more like GB/GBC/GBA and NES.

EDIT 2: If you're a Pokemon junkie, you can officially play all (or almost all) previous generations of Pokemon. GB/GBA games are in eShop, you can play DS/3DS games on cartridge and I think you can transfer all Pokemon out of those games officially with the PokeBank app in the eShop and transfer them to the new Pokemon Home app on Switch and mobile. I don't have all the details, but this would let you carryover all previous Pokemon into Home officially.

It is objectively sharper since, again, it's the same resolution and smaller, so higher DPI. Regarding TN vs IPS panels, I never got into that and I would assume unless you had both next to each other, you wouldn't notice, and you definitely wouldn't notice while playing a game for an extended period of time.

Coming back for another edit:
what the previous person was talking about is the "IPS" screen lottery on the new 3DS XL. IPS screens are more highly sought after, with some versions like the Zelda edition, more likely to have IPS screens. This 2DS all have the same screens (really 1 big screen with plastic covering up to divide it into 2). I don't think it's it big deal to try to get an IPS screen, and you're not guaranteed to get any IPS panels even if you get a new 3DS XL and doesn't really affect what or how you play, but the hardcore 3DS people swear by the IPS screens.

Anyone with experience with Nintendo's refurbs know what kind of packaging this comes in since it is refurbished? Curious because it'd make a nice gift.

Wait wait, SNES hacks don't work here? Just too underpowered or what?

Someone else earlier said SNES emulation through hacks works fine, but better on the "new" hardware. Officially, SNES Virtual Console games from the eShop (online store) don't work on this 2DS, only the "new" line of 2DS/3DS consoles (which were a mid cycle refresh with newer CPU). GBA works fine since, I think, it's not emulation but running natively on the CPU due to the lineage and backwards compatibility (GBA > DS > 3DS/2DS).

My 8 year old has played a ton of Switch and 2DS this past year at home. Lots of quality games, especially if they're gamers and care about the big franchises like Mario, Zelda (Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask remakes and an original Link to the Past "sequel" called A Link Between Worlds are must plays), Pokemon to name the obvious ones. Younger ones might get a kick out of licensed games that you maybe don't want to spend too much on for the Switch. And it plays all original DS generation games, so lots of great games that you can't play on the Switch.
thanks for the advice, I went ahead and ordered. Applause

No preloaded games aside from the little AR minigames they included. There are some "Free to Start" games on the eShop like Pokemon Picross, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, Stretchmo (a part of the Pushmo series,)
Some games like Bravely Default and Pokemon have demos available that can later transfer benefits to retail games.
There are homebrew guides online if you want to use emulators play a minecraft clone proof of concept and pong. Google is your friend when looking up those 3ds hacks.

When I bought my son one 5 or 6 years ago it came in a mostly standard looking 2ds box except that it has a couple banners on it that indicate it's a refurbished product. Also his was one of the translucent red models but the picture on the box showed the standard black with red trim model with a sticker in the corner indicating which one was actually in the box.

So at least back then actual branded boxes existed for these refurbished units, maybe only in the one color with a sticker for each variety though. They could have switched to plain brown boxes at some point since. Either way tell them to hold onto the box and sell it in 20 years to some dolt as rare alternative packaging. Nintendo cardboard is valuable stuff.

Also Minecraft is "New 3ds" only but there's a decent Minecraft like game that my son enjoyed enough called Cube Creator that's $8 but has been going on sale for less than $3 lately. Multiplayer is an add on DLC and it came out after he had grown up a bit, got a switch and had access to real Minecraft so he never bought it. I can't say if it's any good or not but I suspect a couple of kids 10 or under would have fun with it though.

Just gonna chime in for a second

After having repaired 3DS devices for a few years, I do not recommend the 2DS in terms of long-term ownership

The main problem is that 2DS parts are more expensive than the standard 3DS counterparts. A single 2DS screen can run you $30+ whereas the new 3DS xl screen is only $15. I would also like to add that the 2DS "screens" are actually one gigantic screen portioned to fit the device shell, so if one "side" breaks, the entire screen is broken.

Combined with lacking stereo, being very small for adults, no 3D, no amiibo reading, not having IPS, it's not worth it getting a 2DS.

The best models are the 3DS XL original and the new 3DS X no question.
For someone with big hands I strongly prefer playing on the 2DS than my n3DS XL. It's also the most comfortable xDS since the original DSi. The 3DS XL versions get heavy after a while. Handheld game enjoyment relies on comfort.

It looks so uncomfortable though. How is it in the hands?

I think it's a good bang for the buck. Not as good as the newest version but if you want the basics. 3D gives me a headache. Won't beak in half. I think it's the best valued emulation machine on the market made by a big company. Hack it pretty easily to play back up 2DS, 3DS, and DS games. Most retro consoles like NES, SNES, Gameboy, Genesis, etc. All you need is a memory card for everything.
