That's because the heat degrades the signal and causes interference. Especially in Hell, but also in Utah. With the satellite dish attachment, you can clearly get 16 miles.

Got one thanks, but nobody is communicating with me when I use it?
Did you have anybody communicating with you before you got one?

OK, what are these good for? In case of emergency I'm guessing where communication is knocked out?

(Asking from a city guy perspective)
You can pretend you are a school superintendent

Does this get channel 19 in case I need to tell some trucker that the chicken coop is full of bears?
These are not CB (Citizens Band) radios, so I doubt it. Just gonna hafta put on the cop lights.

Great for camping with friends, or for us, Camper trailer backing. One person outside guiding the driver. These are a huge benefit for backing up an RV or camper trailer. Also two or more car caravans on the road, for kids during road trips... lots of uses

Another couple of uses:
-theme parks, city parks, events, etc where some of your party may separate but still be relatively close
-communicating between multiple cars traveling together. I know someone is going to say "why not use a cell phone" but when a quick turn is needed, that 45-60 seconds to dial / connect is WAY too long.

I use them frequently when attending to my 5 acres of grass, I'd much rather damage a 2 way radio than my cell phone.

Use case: kayaking in areas of no cell service.
Need some for a river cabin and calling for a pickup, these are tempting but probably not good enough..
