Epic idea!
These units won't work on a cruise ship... The baofengs should though.

Even thought my local one had 6+ today, I could find any. I did find some Uniden sx409-3ckem 3 pack for $59, down from $109. There were a few more sets marked down too. Solid walkies for those who need something more quality/longer range and more features.

Another use case...while in a cruise with family and friends. No cell signal in the middle of the ocean. I don't use this brand though...I use Baofeng units and they work great!
what model of baofeng do u use? the hame radio one or the walkie talkie version?

I joined Brickseek for a month but will probably cancel since WalMart is always off.
I had no idea BrickSeek felt they had a product people would pay over $350 a year for.

I started with the 9.99 one but not worth it even at 0.99 cents

Showed 6 left at my local wallymart. I should have known, but of course none left when I got there. Walmart employees pointing me all over the store from the electronics section to digging through the piles of unorganized clearance items and nothing- good times!

Just to clarify the only way these could possibly do 16 miles is from the top of one mountain to the top of another without any obstructions and the right weather. In a city you likely won't get a mile.

I just picked up a bunch of the UV-5RTP. They were on sale on the Baofeng site with free shipping. Basically the same as the UV-5R except it goes to 8w as opposed to 5W. There are some good package deals on amazon that include programming cable and hand held receivers as well. Great radio.

It's been stated before but many still believe the 16-mile BS.

These used to be very useful on the ski slopes and woods before cell phone coverage became more prevalent.

Could be useful in Europe if you don't want to get cell service for a short period of time. But now most ski resorts have wifi all over the place.
