Looks like if you don't have currently enabled Amazon Sidewalk devices, you won't have the option in your Alexa setting to turn it off(?)

So later on additional device become enabled, you need to turn off Amazon Sidewalk at that time??? Meaning if Amazon suddenly enable older gen Echo (or other device currently not in the list) to act as sidewalk, then at later time, the option to turn it off will be available and someone need to remind you to turn off sidewalk???

Or in the future you buy newer echo devices, then need to remind yourself to turn off sidewalk at that time....

OK. Find this.

Echo Plus (all generations)
Echo Show (2nd gen)

That's how it starts...j/k

I would be just as concerned about the UWB vulnerabilities that Apple and Google are using/going to use for their tracking tags. However, throughout human history, humans have figured out how to use new technologies for nefarious purposes with great alacrity. This is nothing new in that regard. Since I've only got 2nd Gen Echoes, I am not personally tied to Sidewalk.

It's true that any tool can be misused for nefarious purposes. But at the same time, most uses of most tools are within the context of the intended design. I'm not entirely unconventional, but I'm also not especially fearful, both because the data is triple encrypted and because, well, I'm well aware that I'm just not that interesting to most nefarious people 🤣

I think it's a pretty cool feature, I'm interested to see what it becomes.

"Another potential concern is that, while the "donation" of your bandwidth to the Sidewalk network is capped at 500MB per month, if you are on a plan in which your data usage is very limited, you might want to opt out of the service (more on how to do that in a moment)."

That's more than I want to possibly share without getting paid.

500MB isn't exactly a lot of data, especially given that most of it's just communication between IoT devices.

TLDR:

To turn the service off in the Alexa app, tap "More" in the lower right corner then Settings > Account Settings > Amazon Sidewalk. When you are on the Sidewalk page, simply turn the toggle switch next to "Enabled" to the off position.

In the Ring app, first tap the three lines in the upper left of the screen. Then tap Control Center > Sidewalk and tap the Sidewalk toggle switch. Confirm that you want to disable the service and you'll be all set.
Thank you for the instructions. In my case, I do not see the Sidewalk link, so I can't turn it on or off. I have an Echo, and Fire TV ( I guess the fire TV is not an issue).

I believe the Alexa app on my iPad is up to date (it recently updated.)

I just noticed the Wiki on this thread - Echo devices 3rd generation and newer have Sidewalk right now. I guess my echo device is older (I have no idea what generation it is.)

Thanks for the reminder. I remember getting an email from Amazon a couple months ago regarding the SideWalk. Turned off Guess Connect and Sidewalk. My internal network is just fine, thanks anyway Amazon.

You should really take the time to read about what it is and it's benefits. It used LoRa and low energy Bluetooth to devices only approved by Amazon.

Some use cases could be a dog collar with LoRa to find a lost dog.

This is incredibly moronic to enable. Practically zero upside for consumers. I can't believe anyone would want this.

This is a good thing. Stupid news trying to make an issue of it. A mesh network is amazing.

Here are the directions if you already know about this and don't want to seek them out buried in the above-linked article, and they are a little vague to boot.
  1. Open the Alexa app
  2. Open More and select Settings
  3. Select Account Settings
  4. Select Amazon Sidewalk
  5. Disable it at the bottom of the screen
I had already opted out from a previous post on it.

I have 3 amazon echos... and I think they would be on sidewalk, but when I follow your steps, there is no sidewalk option there under account settings. Frown
