Great router. Follow the bayareatechpros instructions to flash to Asus firmware and then flash the latest MerlinWRT. Buy 2 or more and use ASUS AiMesh for wider coverage.
Great router for its time, but its not worth buying any longer, get something newer and save your money!
So I guess I'd like your opinion pr direction on what to buy. I have two tm ac1900 routers flashed to asus merlin. I know these are mid range dual core processors in this. Using aimesh for one in basement and one in living room with 2.4 and 5ghz ssids broadcasting. Moving to a larger house and was going to either add a third for the 2nd floor or a higher end $200-$400 router that was quad core that would be head end Main router. Just don't know if it's worth it. I have 100/5mbps connection and all my devices that can be hardwired are but still a good amount of wifi devices. I was looking at asus ax110000 Rog router.

Depends on how many square ft you have. I gonna say just buy another high end Asus router to use as the main hub and use your old routers as satellites with wired backend.

So originally this comment was made for people who only got about $100 to spend you can get a TP-LINK AX3000 or AX21 for around that price, even some mesh options like the Deco M5s. The Asus AX3000 also around $130 on deal right now. Now I will address your higher budget.
Love the AX11000 idea and microcenter currently in store has it for $370. If you dont need consistently above 1gig speeds on your wireless a great pick up. Since you only have 100/5 it would make sense. Unless you do a lot of in network streaming or transfers, then the more throughput the better.
I just bought the TP-Link AX5700 deal from Costco for $300 cause of the extremely impressive numbers the system has put up. I have a set of Orbi RBK50's I will be selling and putting the AX5700 in its place. Put into perspective it has the current highest speeds of any Mesh to date, I have not had a chance to compare it to the Wifi 6E that just launched. This system tested around 1450Mbps close range and 1150Mbps 30 ft from the router which even smokes a lot of high end quad core single router solutions. Great for high LAN use households with transfer data a lot, stream, or even work with content creation. Numbers were on a 2x2 wifi 6 client, even wifi 5 clients got some impressive numbers.
In another location I have an Asus GT-AC5300 and either going to get the AX11000, AXE11000, or the X89X for AiMesh. I know the AX11000 is slower and by a very large margin compared to the AX5700 but the AXE11000 is slightly faster and X89X are about even.
If I am really impressed with the AX5700 I might give up the additional customization options of Asus and just use the AX5700 full time.

I have 1500 square feet ranch with a basement. Going to 2500 square 2 story with full basement. Yep all my aimesh have wired bachhaul that all run to gig switches. I guess when they roll out 1000 symmetrical fiber that be a faster router. Want coverage through all rooms, garage and back yard patio.
What is newer around this price or lower that is as good as what I have heard about this router?
I listed a few options in the post right above, but nothing around $50 remember your buying a refurb. Around $100 would be the closest price point and the routers and mesh I listed above all do better.
This router was good rock solid for 6 years, until I upgraded it to newer firmware that supports aimesh. It has become terrible since then. Drop connections, ai node losing connection. Tried various ways to fix it, but no luck.

I don't understand why rolling back to original FW wouldn't let it run as before?
