Lutron Caseta is the best one out there but you'll need a hub to work with it. Rock solid, never had issues with it. Capatible with all of the major smart systems out there. Switches under $40 are common on eBay.
The problem is without neutral, the wires in the wall are just half of the circuit, and you can't do work with half of an electrical circuit. And when the lights are off, the current stops flowing, so how does the smart switch remain powered? Without neutral, you have to get tricky.
Very simply, no-neutral smart switches create a series circuit with the bulb, and assume some power can flow through the bulb even when it's off. Incandescent bulbs work fine for this, because at low power they just act like a wire. And low power is all the switch needs. LED bulbs are NOT just a wire, so an older smart switch would make LED bulbs flicker because LEDs also require much less power to operate, and therefore try to turn on.
So you need a no neutral switch designed to work with LEDs for this all to work. A switch that needs neutral won't work without it, because the internal circuit needed is different from a no-neutral switch.
Damn another that requires neutral wire. Anyone have recommendations for a non-neutral wire system? Thanks in advance.

+1 I have the Casetas in ten locations and i have never, ever had a moment of issue, dimming and regular switches, lamp plug in modules, remote switches mounted to look like wired switches - all 100% blend together and no issues after power outages etc.
i'm looking for something cheap to fill in for a bunch of outdoor lighting etc but it's hard to stray from something sooo damn good

Of course it requires neutral. How else would it provide power to the wireless device? Unless you want a battery operated unit.
Neutral is required because you need "two" wires to provide power to the onboard circuitry. otherwise, it would only have power while the switch is physically turned on

Yea, duhhhhhh guys
Anyways, is there a switch that doesn't require a neutral wire AND hub? Lol my cheap ass doesn't want to buy a hub =P.
