This deal is not for everyone, unless you have a friend in the HVAC business you will more than likely have to self install as most companies understandably will not install self purchased equipment. This is not ductless.

3.5 ton air condenser plus encased coil for $1357. Listing states 14 SEER but when I looked at what is included it appears to be 16 SEER.

Best price I could see for the two pieces separately was $1271 for the condenser and 534 for the encased coil.

There are many combinations available but I cannot speak to the savings. This is the size I was looking for so I know this is a good deal.

can this unit support split heat or is it generally not that way with these types of units,( yes an unlikely situation but figured id try anyway)

While I have nothing to say about this specific unit, I want to mention that the manufacturer warranty is usually only valid if installed by licensed HVAC contractors. Also, HVAC guys aren't gonna be thrilled if you buy the equipment yourself and sidestep their dealer networks. Just pointing it out, YMMV. To me, even with the warranty, every service call is at least $100 regardless if the parts are under warranty or not so DIY'ing it makes sense.

The one I bought is designed to be used on conjunction with a gas or oil hot air furnace. Others may have an option to add strip heating.

Good points. However, with some creativity you can sidestep the disgruntled ac repair person who didn't get the install with some excuse like, "my wife bought this for me as a present, and I was in over my head trying to appease her installing it myself", or "it was installed by the previous owners", or "I won it in a charity raffle and the kids from the local high school shop class put it in" Come on, maaaan.

Can someone explain to me why HVAC techs would be unhappy if they were paid to install a self-purchased unit? Is it just that they're missing out on the extra markup profit on the equipment?

That, and because word of mouth in the age of social media can be powerful. If they install something that the homeowner bought, and something went wrong with it and then started blasting the HVAC guy saying he installed it wrong it can hurt their business. I know that's why my plumbing customers hate installing stuff that customers provide. They usually mark up the labor so much that the homeowner won't use them and will call someone else.

Yes, that is why. My brother works as an A/C tech and he says that the markup is absolutely ridiculous. A few years back the capacitor on my house A/C unit went out. He took me to a shop that sells to the public. The capacitor was $15. He said that if his company was to supply it, the cost is $2 (to the company) but if I was to hire his company to install it, they would charge me minimum $75 for the part plus minimum 1 hour labor at $150/hour. It took less than 5 minutes to change it out.
The markup on parts is quite high

IMO the prices HVAC companies charge to do simple type installs is insane. There was a problem with my condenser fan at the house I had purchased a few years earlier. I called the company who installed it and was told the warranty on hardware is covered but labor isn't covered since I am not the original buyer. Labor to replace the outside consider fan(not the entire unit, just the fan) was $800. If I had to buy the hardware it would have been another $1000 for that part. I know I got ripped off but at least it was partially under warranty. I asked them how much a capacitor is to replace and they said $250.

This is so true. I had outside compressor go bad in ac only unit. Called the company that installed in the house. They replaced the whole outside unit at a cost of over $5100. I had my father in law check on the price of unit and it was $1387 his cost as he was ac business owner in another state. Felt really riped off as this was a good days work for them. I do as much of my own work as I can now.

we recently had a ductless unit installed in our garage. i have been wanting one for years, quotes always were near what a unit for our house would cost. last year, i again started looking. quotes as high as 15 grand for a 400 sq ft garage!! i was ready to pull the trigger for 3300+450 for wiring, then another company came in at 2300 installed, including tt&l.

This is not a 16 seer system. Only way to make it 16 seer is use a TXV and a compatible furnaces with ECM drive. It is only 14 seer in the same situation. It is up to these seer ratings if you install them correctly and with the right additions. Self installing is a bad idea. Especially if you do not have the right equipment. No, I would never install a self bought system for someone. Warranty is a nightmare. Usually there is not one. Why would I lose out on profits so someone can try to be cheap? My time is valuable. Only way I would is with a contract saying AS IS, NO WARRANTY. How many builders let you buy all the wood to build a house?
