These crazy days it may be Cheaper to buy a cheap car off Facebook at your destination for a week and sell back to Carmax when your trip is over. Or another option is to check out Uhauls daily rate. It's lame driving a uhaul but they may be available

That's per day. Just before memorial day I wanted to use up some free miles to cancel a UA credit card. Booked two different flights and had to cancel because no cars. The third flight we went to southern Utah, went to Salt Lake City first. $150 a day for a car in Salt Lake City??? Had to pay it even though I didn't want to because I couldn't use the miles otherwise.

I've heard about this as well. Car rental companies sold their fleets because rentals were dead due to Covid. They have been unable to replenish because of Covid and the chip shortage... compound that with reduced travel business and restrictions and it's a perfect storm for crazy high prices. IMO we are still a year away from "new normal".

Don't they charge auto registration fees though? Or do you just skip it and can get away wit it?

Whatever you do, please find an alternative to Expedia. I have had the worst experiences with them where they refuse to enforce flight rules and gave me the runaround for weeks. Just google it - company has deteriorated and doesn't deserve your business
