I've built an entire rabbit hutch using only this for wood, plastic, and caging and didn't even get through 2 batteries. Never shut off on its own even once. Also cut tons of metal rails for hanging cabinets and shelving using this to cut the rails, also never once overheated. Your friend must've just had a dud. You also need to use the larger batteries for this, just like you would with the circular saw. As for chargers, maybe there's something wrong with his wiring, if he's having chargers fried, that damages the battery which can mess up the tool too. My boss buys exclusively Milwaukee tools, and only M12's unless it's a tool that's only M18. Never had a problem once with any of them.
Please don't tie up their inventory by letting it sit. That creates a hardship for the store and for other customers that may not be able to find inventory because the one you don't want is sitting away on a shelf somewhere.
Order the tool for store pick-up and the battery to be shipped, then cancel the battery shortly after the order is placed.
Not in stock locally so I get a ship to home or ship to store as a combo.. Hmm. Decisions decisions I have unopened M12 batteries already and a ton M12 and variety of M18 tools.
When I did the tool for pickup, I got your pricing. When I switched the tool to shipping and left the battery for pickup, it went to 85.79, confirmed on my receipt after the order went through.
I bought it this way intentionally so I could cancel pickup and it was $94.72. Must be region specific.

For cut-off tool, the battery is way too weak.
I don't really expect it to be running more than 5-10 minutes.
Could be nice add-on for existing M12 system though, like occasional cutting of rebar or metal sheets.

I don't need another tool.... I don't need another tool... Modified into a belt sander you say?
The belt sander mod will cost $80 for harbor freight part, $50 for mod kit on eBay, and $100 or so for this tool. Quite expensive when the Ryobi belt sander is just $50 for tool only.
I bought this Milwaukee and was interested in the mod, but won't pay 4x unless I had a lot of use for it.

Harbor freight tool is $24.99. Yes, still more expensive than the Ryobi, but if you are in the Milwaukee ecosystem already it's not a bad mod. I've got both Ryobi and Milwaukee stuff, but I'm doing the mod anyways because I like how much lighter this Milwaukee system is than the Ryobi.

I have a love-hate relationship with this tool. I've purchased and sold it two different times. It has a lot of different uses: cutting metal, PVC, drywall, tile, but I always end up selling it because it makes such a mess. It's a circular saw, so what do you want. I had hopes that the included dust shroud hooked up to a dust collector would help, but it really doesn't do much at all to help control dust.

A friend of mine has a whole set of these 12V and 18V cordless Fuel tools. I used them a couple weeks ago. NOT impressed one bit. The cutoff saw, specifically, kept shutting itself down while cutting through 3/8" ABS plastic. I assume from overheating. I'd let it rest for 30 seconds, get about 6 seconds of lackluster use, then rest 30 seconds, etc. I had to say something to him.
Me: "These tools suck man."
Him: "Yeah they're not great."
Yes, fully charged battery, which brings up point #2. He's had two of the battery chargers crap out on him.
Milwaukee is usually a solid brand name. But after my last experience, there's ZERO chance I'd buy their Fuel line. Just my 2 cents.

When you used it to cut wood, did you have to use a different blade?
Use the carbide abrasive wheel. Or, the included alternate piece that locks the wheel in place can hold Dremel SawMax wheels, one of which is for cutting wood. It doesn't look anything like a saw blade, that's for an entirely different tool.
