The Defender is a BRICK of a hybrid two-piece design (technically three-piece, two material).
The Commuter has a sleeker back while presenting fewer rubberized surfaces in what is still a hybrid two-piece design.
This Symmetry series comes just under the Commuter as it attempts to retain some of the benefits of the two-material design in a one-piece case.
That then makes this bulkier than many single-material case designs, but slimmer or as slim as any other two piece design (the Spigen NeoHybrid comes to mind).
Good luck!

Otherwise, I would strongly recommend the Symmetry for anyone seeking a smoother out of pocket experience without compromising too much of the ruggedness of the bulkier Defender. Of course, I would qualify that recommendation by saying that I would only buy an Otterbox case from either Amazon (sold by/shipped by) or Otterbox directly.
This was an interesting deal for me until I saw that it was a 3rd party Amazon seller.
Good luck!

I never had any problems with my non-clear Symmetry cases. Loved the protection they offer and the easy in and out of jeans' pocket. I would have one now but they were $50 when I got my iPhone 12 Pro Max.
To give you an idea about the quality of an Otterbox case, last December I put my phone on the fender of my Jeep while changing the oil. Long story short, I forgot about it until after I had driven to my wife's office. Find My iPhone showed that it was on I10 a few mile from house. It had flown off my fender at 80 miles an hour in the far left lane and somehow ended up against a concrete barrier next to the right hand shoulder. I went to find it mainly just to see how bad of condition it was in. The phone was not cracked or even scratched. I have never had a phone break on me before and I bought the Defender case only because it was the best deal I could find on a case on Black Friday. I'm sold for life…

I had a Lenovo laptop in only a leather portfolio case. Put it on my roof as I put my suit jacket in that back seat. Drove off and forgot the laptop. Got on the highway and saw something black fly off my car. Realized what it was and slammed my brakes on. Backed up and picked it up off the highway. Zero damage other than tiny scratches on the corner of the front of the top of the laptop near the hinge. And that was only a thin leather portfolio style case.

If you like the sweet spot of the Symmetry (and if you're not specifically seeking a clear option) the Commuter Lite might be another option for you to consider in the future. I'm really a bit unclear about the positioning Otterbox is creating around this case as it honestly just seems like a cost-reduced Commuter (or perhaps a Commuter for the "rest of us", i.e. - buyers of budget phones). At the same time, it manages to further slim down their two-layer option to bring it closer to the one-piece Symmetry series.
Good luck!
