Thanks to Deal Hunter serra for finding this deal.

Note, book this offer from June 8 - 22

About the USA Rail Pass:

After you purchase your pass, you will be able to start booking each segment of your trip directly from your purchase confirmation, by going to 'Modify Trip' on Amtrak.com, or by looking up your reservation on the Amtrak mobile app.
  • A travel segment occurs any time you board and disembark a train (or other scheduled services). If your trip involves making one connection, you will use two segments of your USA Rail Pass.

You have to use all 10 rides within 30 days from your first ride. But the first ride has to be made within 120 days of the pass purchase.

Not just the distance between cities but the layout. In most cities you're gonna need to rent a car over and over to get around within town, and if you're doing that - just rent the car and drive the distance.

Snob? I agree that Euro trains are way nicer than Amtrak for so many reasons, go to way more places, and run far more often, but Amtrak isn't THAT bad for what it is. Trains are usually pretty clean and in decent shape, seats are comfortable and have lots of room to stretch and recline quite a bit, the food's not gourmet but not too bad either. It's hardly a third world nightmare with people packed like sardines and even on the roof. I've been on much worse trains abroad.
What trains have you been on that are worse? The NYC subway is domestic in case you want to point fingers at that. I've traveled multiple countries including in developing parts of the world in Asia. Amtrak is by far the worst in terms of price, on time performance, amenities, customer service and don't even get me started on connections.

Useful in some areas... but back in the day I went from St Louis to Denver... and that required changing trains 3 times. So roundtrip 6 different changes. I paid far less than $299 for that trip.

Way more than on planes, even in coach. I think you're allowed to check in 2-3 suitcases per person, included in the price, and if you book a room that's in addition to what you can fit in your room AND a decent-sized public storage space in the lower level of the sleeper car. So, in coach that's 2-3 per person, and in sleepers that's 4-5. Who travels with more unless they're moving?
Good the give people large gifts from far away. For example, people that aren't near a Trader Joes and have a hankering for some specialty chips, salsa, canned wine, Alcohol, etc...

You're soooo right. Honolulu, Hawaii looks just like Mobile, Alabama! I always get Anchorage mixed up with Houston because they look so much alike.

Have you ever left your city or house?

Am I missing something here or does this 'deal' require you to take 10 train trips in a span of 30 days, at $30 per trip? Who does that? Where are you going that you won't need a car when you get there, and you're only staying 3 days or so at every single one of the 10 places you go? Maybe for someone who lives in Philly and works in NYC?
not 10 trips, 10 segments. So say you're planning to take the train to visit Napa CA from the east coast. you'd usually pay $200 each way, probably much more short notice. this way, you can keep your plans flexible, leave any day you want in that 120 day window, and it's going to cost you $90 each way (3 segments)

you can stop by glacier national park on a 2nd trip, 2 segments each way, usually $150 with advance notice, only $60 with this pass)

so 2 trips that would have cost a minimum $700 is now $299, seems pretty slick to me

How's this never become a big thing? Eurail on the other hand is awesome.
Because the Eurail pass is a *pass*, for unlimited travel btw all points during its active period, & none of this "10 segments btw 2 cities & cities in between" b.s? Just a guess...

looking at amtrak's site, a trip from DC to San Francisco 6/19-6/28 would be $378 in coach or $1453 in a room.
returning is $197 in coach or $1589 for a room.
if you book further in advance that cost drops down to $197 each way for coach, still $400 round trip vs this pass which is $300. Rooms seem to always be priced sky high

"Fare Types: USA Rail Pass is available for Saver and Value Fares only. Segments offering only Flexible Fares are not available for rail pass bookings. When booking your segment on Amtrak.com or the Amtrak app, we will provide guidance on which departures are available with your pass."

Anyone know how restrictive this is? I tried looking up "flexible fares" but nothing came up.

a better comparison is "every city within the same country in Europe look pretty much the same"
you know, as if different countries had different cultures...

I tethered to my phone. There were definitely times where I didn't have service (this was about ten years ago), but I'd say that 75% of the time I had good consistent service and the other 25% was iffy or I had zero service. When I didn't have service usually coincided with epic scenery so it was a good excuse to take a break and worked out pretty well for me Smilie

I'm really glad this was posted. Being a West Coaster myself, I had no idea how expensive the train is. Wow. 😮

FWIW a 10-day Eurail pass is $777, yikes, makes this seem like a bargain despite all the hassles.
The EU Rail pricing is very much tiered based on things like, (1) how many countries you want to include, and (2) whether you're a student or a senior, and such.

In other words, it can be much cheaper than €777.

Also the quality, utility, and speed of EU trains is generally much better. (There's obviously a lot of variance between countries in the EU, but I doubt there are many people who would say the typical US passenger train is better than the typical EU passenger train.) (This is not to poke fun at US trains, but merely to suggest we have so much more potential.)
