About the USA Rail Pass:
  • The USA Rail Pass allows you to take a multi-segment journey on Amtrak for one low, fixed price. You have to use all 10 rides within 30 days from your first ride. But the first ride has to be made within 120 days of the pass purchase.

How do you work on the train? The amtrak wifi is garbage based on my experience

Not just the distance between cities but the layout. In most cities you're gonna need to rent a car over and over to get around within town, and if you're doing that - just rent the car and drive the distance.

This is true of literally every country on earth (as anyone who's take the RER into Paris from CDG knows). But there are plenty of scenic routes on Amtrak, especially out west, like basically every route, and I've taken several of them. Coast Starlight and California Zephyr stand out. Back east the Cardinal is gorgeous (literally when it travels along the New River Gorge), and the Lake Shore Limited is pretty scenic along the Hudson.

Obviously a room is preferable but Amtrak seats have more room than many first class plane seats. I don't know why people knock it so much, especially given that congress has historically massively underfunded it (and I won't even get into why as that's political).

Pretty sure it would count as two. One from Chicago to Emeryville and one(bus) from
Emeryville to San Francisco. If you only go almost all the way to Emeryville it would be considered one segment. I am sure I will be corrected if wrong.

A segment is defined as getting onto a train, then getting off at some point down the line. Theoretically, you could start in NYC and ride to New Orleans on the Crescent (first segment,) Then take the Sunset Limited to LA (Second segment,) hop the Coast Starlight to Seattle (third segment,) jump onto the Empire Builder to Chicago (4th segment,) Then onto the Lakeshore Limited back to NYC (5th segment.)

And then go do it all again for $299 total. Or some other variation with Chicago in the middle, like the Southwest Chief from CHI-LAS. Whatever. This pass could cover as many as 20 days of just train travel. Buy 4 - Cheaper than rent.

When you step off the train, you can layover in that city as long as you wish as long as you don't go over the 30-day limitation, but I suppose that as long as you get on the last train before midnight on the 30th day, you're good regardless of how long the ride might be..

In Emeryville, pay for the transit to SF. Use the bus or the local train, then keep the segment for something useful that costs $300 on Amtrak.

I had a friend who was traveling on Amtrak from NYC to SF, who said: "I'm flexible, in good shape, and Ambien works for me. So I'll just book a seat and take Ambien every night to get a good night's sleep.

He arrived exhausted and actually paid about $1000 to upgrade to a room on his way back.

You can travel to most major cities by rail, but outside of the Northeast cities you mentioned and a few others like Chicago, you wouldn't want to. In the west and south, cities tend to sprawl so even where public transportation is good, it takes a long time to get around that way.

LoL, maybe you've had better experiences than me, but, central Europe including Poland has amazing trains. Amtrak toilets are crappy (no pun intended), air conditioning doesn't always work and the seats are hard as fark for a $100 4 hour train ride

Some 20 years ago, as a foreigner/tourist, I travelled across USA with a similar 30day Amtrak pass. I visited Boston, NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco as all have city transit/public transportation. I also managed to visit Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon. I stayed about 3 days and 2 night at each city. I used Lonely Planet's "USA on a Shoestring" to find recommendations on cheap lodging (mostly hostels/YMCA, B&B) and food.

I don't know how viable this is now with Covid-19 destination closures and bedbugs in many hotels/hostels.

Hahaha, it will cost more than a flight which will drop you closer to where you want to be in less than half the time. Hahaha, tickets will be insane expensive or subsidized by tax payers or both.
