About the USA Rail Pass:
- The USA Rail Pass allows you to take a multi-segment journey on Amtrak for one low, fixed price. After you purchase your pass, you will be able to start booking each segment of your trip directly from your purchase confirmation, by going to 'Modify Trip' on Amtrak.com, or by looking up your reservation on the Amtrak mobile app.
- A travel segment occurs any time you board and disembark a train (or other scheduled services). If your trip involves making one connection, you will use two segments of your USA Rail Pass.
- The pass validity period is 120 days following the date of your purchase. Once you travel on your first segment, you will have 30 days before your pass expires.
- The USA Rail Pass is not a ticket and is not valid for travel; it is used to obtain all tickets for travel. You must have a ticket and a reservation for each train you board.
- Travel in regular Coach class seats which feature wide, reclining seats with a big picture window, ample legroom, and no middle seat.
- Hop on/off the train across 500 destinations

Emeryville to San Francisco. If you only go almost all the way to Emeryville it would be considered one segment. I am sure I will be corrected if wrong.

A segment is defined as getting onto a train, then getting off at some point down the line. Theoretically, you could start in NYC and ride to New Orleans on the Crescent (first segment,) Then take the Sunset Limited to LA (Second segment,) hop the Coast Starlight to Seattle (third segment,) jump onto the Empire Builder to Chicago (4th segment,) Then onto the Lakeshore Limited back to NYC (5th segment.)
And then go do it all again for $299 total. Or some other variation with Chicago in the middle, like the Southwest Chief from CHI-LAS. Whatever. This pass could cover as many as 20 days of just train travel. Buy 4 - Cheaper than rent.
When you step off the train, you can layover in that city as long as you wish as long as you don't go over the 30-day limitation, but I suppose that as long as you get on the last train before midnight on the 30th day, you're good regardless of how long the ride might be..

returning is $197 in coach or $1589 for a room.
if you book further in advance that cost drops down to $197 each way for coach, still $400 round trip vs this pass which is $300. Rooms seem to always be priced sky high
And if you don't book a room, you'll regret it.
I had a friend who was traveling on Amtrak from NYC to SF, who said: "I'm flexible, in good shape, and Ambien works for me. So I'll just book a seat and take Ambien every night to get a good night's sleep.
He arrived exhausted and actually paid about $1000 to upgrade to a room on his way back.

I've never rented a car for any of the cities I mentioned above. And probably never would. Oregon, Arizona, New mexico on the other hand - definitely had to (wanted to) rent a car for those.
And you'd still need to find a place to sleep for each of the destinations, right? Any thoughts from those who've done this before? I've never been on vacation (the fam doesn't approve of young me driving alone) and so hoping someone who's a veteran can speak up!
I don't know how viable this is now with Covid-19 destination closures and bedbugs in many hotels/hostels.
not sure how lots of states are huge has anything to do with rail not working well other than it would poorly in other markets too.
