APC UPS - disabling the alarm

12,032 2,046 June 8, 2021 at 04:13 PM
I just purchased some replacement batteries for two of my UPS devices. However I want to disable to constant alarm for when a battery goes out. If the battery fails while I'm at work then it will be just 8 hours of a constant ringing that will scare the hell out of the dog. A simple chirp or something isn't bad but a high-pitched, endless squeal is completely unnecessary. This isn't a life-saving device, it's just to shut off a computer properly when power goes out.

The two models that I have are the BE350G and the BE450G. One is for my modem and router (with only these two things drawing power I get to keep internet for a while if power goes out). The other is for a very low-powered NAS.

You can use powerchute on the 450 to disable the alarm but I'm not sure of any way for the 350.

If you can't access it with software, and there is no method on the unit to turn the alarm off, then either buy a new unit, or perhaps crack it open and jam a screwdriver in the horn, unsolder it or maybe even some glue in it might muzzle it. Or I guess put the whole thing in a WELL insulated box to muffle the noise.

I've done that. Hot glue, pliers, or a thumb tack to the piezo beeper would be the easiest. If it isn't board mounted you could just cut the wire. Desoldering is an option too. If software isn't an option, just be careful and allow time for caps to discharge. Verify that they're discharged before you go poking your fingers around. Obviously with power and the battery disconnected.
