Because companies make profit off our ignorances of what their technology actually offers; So local storage is convenient but lightly unnecessary (to an extent)

...because Chromebooks are made to operate mostly "within browser" and since the world is WiRelEsS now, a strong business move would be to push T H E C L O U D and have customers' files "safe in the cloud" and produce an entire laptop computer that does this. It's been like at least 7 years now since the Chromebook was released.

The Cloud is (are?) server farms in buildings where they have your data saved....Whiiich is only accessible by you (or so we're told); This amounts to you using a computer without over-storing software alongside your millions of videos etc.
That "was" the idea but in reality it is just not very realistic to stay connected all the time. Per the original concept if you lose Internet connection due to internet outage or anything like being in flight the device becomes totally useless.
Even Google has changed somewhat to allow some level of offline usage. It is quite dangerous to keep all your data in cloud only. A more reasonable/safer option is to do like Google Drive or Dropbox, which stores a copy on your device with another copy in the cloud.
And you can keep infrequently used/unimportant data in cloud only. In this case you still need some amount of storage on your device.

the build quality and screen are nice, it's debatable whether the cpu is even good enough to make the unit worth 180

geekbench is hardly the end all of speed and there are probably a ton of factors but vs the Chromebook duet (250)

3965y 361 single 688 multi
helio p60t (duet) 263 single 926 multi

in my experience single is more important for tangible performance (why dual core ipads are a lot faster than low end android with crappy 8 core)

shrug.

not sure what galaxy you live in but being ever more online has been the trend for about 50 yrs lol. not less.

honestly if your internet is out you wont be using your computer, basically, in 2021. even at that, you can do offline stuff with chrome now as you mention. but nobody will. because yeah.

i dont think cloud is dangerous to store your data at all. i mean what data is this?

chromebooks are more light duty/surfing machines. everybody should know this by now and lets not teach computers for beginners every time its brought up, because the negative nancys hash this out every time, in a lot of words. lets not. if you dont know what chrome os is by now leave, you have no business operating the slickdeals website.

That price was for the Light Titan color, while $180 was the price for this Arctic Silver. (And honestly this shouldn't really be a new FP deal.) See the thread: https://slickdeals.net/f/15076648-samsung-discount-programs-12-2-chromebook-plus-v2-1920x1200-32gb-emmc-152-free-shipping?v=1

Apparently there are some internal differences (metal vs. plastic) between the two models that may make this model more desirable (IMO it doesn't really, but you can see the links in the thread and make your own decision).
Just got the Arctic Silver. Kind of heavy. I guess I got spoiled the the galaxy pro. going to return back to Samsung.

Thanks. Ordered the $180 version from the last post. Let's hope the hinge issue was isolated to V.1.
I'm afraid V2 also has hinge issues. Be gentle with it, when you open close lid.

Cloud storage? For the long term, it is not cheap at all. And you need a hot spot if you are outside that means you also need to pay more for the data usage.
I need a hotspot if I go outside?!?!?!?

Are you assuming everything you've said eludes me? Not being a jerk but Chromebook uses Google Drive... sooo yes, a person is still meant to use the given hard drive for local files but Google means to attach more online connections of your data, regardless of your access.

I'm saying how it works, it seems to be mistaken with how I work.

If it was good enough to browse the web in 2018 it will handle it fine today, probably better due to improved Chrome memory management. Canceled my Chromebook 2 order for this. Also, the smaller screen on the Plus means a sharper screen than the Chromebook 2. $180 minus 10% cash back from a certain site.

So if you go outside, how do you access your files on the cloud side? Free wifi won't cover everywhere.

Chromebook plus v2 at $152 was a super good deal and at $180 it is still great.

I have/had Galaxy Chromebook, Chromebook Plus v1/2, Chromebook Pro, Lenovo Duet, HP X2 and Pixel Slate.

Chromebook plus v2 is not laggy at all. Yes it is not as fast as others with M3/I3 plus cpus, when you have 8 tabs open or a 500 page pdf open. But it is perfectly usable for medium sized pdf, a few tabs for quick search and video streaming.

I actually prefer the Plus v2 over Galaxy Chromebook because the V2 does not feel as fragile and has a better build quality.

The only concern is that the $180 posted here is the original design when V2 was released. It got so many bad reviews about the failed hinges. The $152 deal with cheap looking color and more rounded casing was released one year later which got great reviews on Amazon. It could actually have an updated hinge design.

You just need to adjust your expection according to the price. This is simply not a premium device. But it has a great feature set of 2-in-1, builtin spen, 16:10 and good battery life. Speed it ggod and perfectly usable.

Yes, the 16:10 is really handy in chrome remote desktop. I can have 16:9 a remote windows desktop in full view in a chrome tab without any black borders.

EOL = End of Life? Interesting... I had no idea that Chromebooks expired. We have two at home, one old and one a little newer. How do I check their EOL?
Google is separating the OS update from the Chrome app update. Right now they have to be upgraded together. Soon, Chrome will be able to update independent of the OS.

What that means is even after EOL in 3 years, the Chrome browser will continue to update with security patches. You'll be able to use your Chromebook for a long, long time.

The "light titan" version is back down to $152. Apparently, that has a plastic keyboard palm rest instead of aluminum.
