As far as the device goes, we're very pleased with our 2020 ultra, it's fast, easy to use, has a ton of apps, and finally delivers beautiful 4k Dolby vision picture. Highly recommended.

Target has it on sale for $69.99 and the $10 off $50 or more for same day pick up option was still available in Google Pay. Thanks!
If indeed this can do upscaling... how exactly does that work? For ex... Can I upscale OTA broadcasts?
However, Roku Ultra still doesn't have as many codecs and doesn't play as many file formats as I would like and you are stuck with just one USB storage media player in its ecosystem. Can anyone recommend a good reliable media box that natively plays pretty much every video format I throw at it at a reasonable price within $50? Possibly Android TV with VLC app? I've read some reviews, but most of them seem to have some issues like not google certified (thus lacking many major apps), overheating, etc. and the ones that are google certified either miss the external storage port/slot or are more expensive than Roku Ultra.
According to this review Tivo is supposed to support these formats:
Video Decoding: H.265 HEVC [email protected] up to 10bits HDR 4K*2K@60fps, H.264 AVC [email protected] up to 10bits HDR 4K*2K@60fps, MPEG-4 ASP@L5 up to 1080P@60fps, AVS Jizhun Profile up to 1080P@60fps, MPEG-2 MP@HL up to 1080P@60fps, MPEG-1 MP@HL up to 1080P@60fps, RealVideo 8/9/10 up to 1080P@60fps, WebM up to VGA, HDR; Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, Video Codec; VP9 Profile 2(up to 4K x 2K@60fps
Video File Format: Support *.mkv, *.wmv,*.mpg,* .mpeg,*.dat, * avi,* .mov,* .iso,* .mp4,* .rm,* ,jpg,* .bmp,* gif etc…

Netflix, amazon, apple tv, hbo max, Apple Car Play, able to play files over network and usb port, Hulu, Disney Plus… the remote is deal easy to use. This thing support most of services out there. You can customize the interface more easily than somethijg like apple TV.
Apple TV - just got rid of awful remote. Expensive. No file play.
Android TV - my parents Sony Master series OLED has it. The interface isnt a mess like firetv, but its close to it.
Roku interface got it right.
And yes, you can play files on USB with both Google Chromecast with Android TV and with the Tivo Stream. You can stream local files as well using Kodi (which is not available with Roku, although Roku does have other means). Kodi is the king of local streaming app.
But you have a great point if you use YouTube TV at this point, but thought they added the live stuff to the regular You Tube app to get around Roku dumping them, but like I said I don't have it so don't actually know for sure.
Google Chromecast with Android TV also has usb-c but it uses it for power so you can get a usb-c hub to add devices.
Tivo is not dead. If you go to the current Tivo thread, you will see people posting links that Tivo is still supporting this. Even if it stops supports right now doesn't mean it is bricked. It will still be very usable well before the hardware become obsolete because it runs on Android TV. For less than half of the price of this to get a much bigger app library, and never have to worry about the next "HBO Max" or Direct TV situation, it's a no brainer.

Roku no longer offers the YoutubeTV app in the roku App Store.
edit - almost forgot, another bonus... the new remote is RF so you don't need line of sight like the old TV Roku IR remote. That thing was finicky, you had to point in just the right spot. New one can be under a blanket pointed in the wrong direction and still work. So much better.

Not sure if you can buy these anymore.
Edit. Think it's usb 2.0. I can playback full 4k mkv through it as long as the external drive is not powered by the USB. However, most of my streaming is over wifi. I can playback the same 4k on it.

Um… roku has phone app. ( remote).
I often watch tv shows on roku and my airpod is synced to my phone.
I can hear the show lag free.
I even did two airpod sharing to my phone and my gf and I watched a show like that.
(3 am…. Roomate was sleeping wanted to finish off a show)
Roku can do almost anything.
