FWIW Dept. These are $19.99 at Harbor Fright. I have the 24" and 36" aluminum versions from HF, and they performed well on my DIY project at home. I am not a professional and these are not the same caliber as RIDGID Tools, but for the price point they are OK for my needs.

Good deal. In for one because I have a tool addiction. 😬. As said in previous comment. When buying tools and not sure what to get... Buy the cheap tool first and use it till you break it or wear it out. Then you know you need something better. Works for most things.

Actually, 14'" to 18" are pretty much "standard" size pipe wrenches. It all depends on the size of the pipe and fittings you are working on.

Correct me if I'm wrong but 18 inches seems too big and unwieldy for anything inside the house right? I can't see any practical application for a layperson DIY. Again, I may be totally wrong

You could...but a steel version vs a aluminum one is night and day difference when you're working over head for a longer time. Your arms will thank you going with the aluminum one

I had to remove an old prv in my house, and it took two of those 18 inch pipe wrenches going opposite directions and another big dude to get that thing loose.

That must've been a heck of a DIY home project to need a 36" pipe wrench. I worked maintenance and construction in a steel mill and we rarely used our 36" and 48" pipe wrenches. 18" and 24" wrenches were our daily drivers, those two sizes could probably cover 95% of the pipe jobs there.

As to this sunex wrench deal, it seems like a very good price. All my Sunex sockets seem to be very high quality, if this pipe wrench is the same type of quality, this is a steal for $20.

Steel pipe wrenches are very durable and great for hitting the handle with a hammer, or for using a cheater bar on, and that's about it. Aluminum handle pipe wrenches are so much nicer to use day in and out. Once you've used an Aluminum pipe wrench, I doubt you'll ever touch your steely again, I know I haven't.

For the homeowner, most of the time, this 14" aluminum [harborfreight.com] for $12.99 before any sales or coupons at HF is fine. Or maybe choose steel from this list [harborfreight.com] and have three or four sizes for similar cost with a lifetime warranty... whatever that is worth.

Besides being cheaper, the nice thing about the heavier steel is that unlike aluminum, you can use a reasonable length of cheater pipe to extend the handle and probably not bend it. Use a long enough pipe to consume all of the handle.

If you are a professional that uses daily, then the lighter weight aluminum and higher quality will often be the choice. You see mostly Ridgid [homedepot.com] and Milwaukee [homedepot.com] on job sites... increasingly, the extendible 'cheater pipe' models.
