I've had the Midea version for a year and its not the best. It is quieter than almost all window mount units, but it has a tendency to make weird sounds that are normally drowned out, so if you're picky about sound when you're trying to sleep (like I am) that could be a problem.

In terms of actual issues, by the end of last summer the blower fan started to make a horrible squeaking sound. I didn't do anything with it at the time, but when I set it up again this week it was the first thing I heard on startup, and sounded even worse. After some disassembly I determined it was the bearing on the fan's motor. They go for like 10 for $10 on Amazon, and another $20-30 for a tool to remove the old one, or you could replace the whole motor. The actual replacement motor unit from Midea is about $50, but backordered until October. I took a chance and bought one on eBay that's making its way to me from China now.

The unit likes to disappear from the app a lot, and its kind of a pain to link them together.

The 8000 BTU has a loud beep whenever you press any button or perform anything in the app. Like, loud enough I can hear it almost anywhere in the house loud. When I had the unit apart to get to the motor I took the time to fill up the little speaker with super glue and add some tape on top to dampen it some, which helped. The higher BTU units can disable the sound via a setting in the app.

The air flap sometimes needs help opening all the way up.

FYI: I don't believe Danby is a true manufacturer of anything....just a brand label, so it's probably the exact same as the Midea version.

YouTube video for both Midea and Danby is identical. Probably same unit. Danby has 2 year in home warranty as well.

I just bought the 8000 BTU unit and found a way to disable the beep in the app. You have to expand the button menu/tray on the bottom of the app when you select the specific unit to see the "Sound" icon. You can also disable the LEDs on the unit which is really nice for us dark sleepers

I have read about that in the Facebook group but I don't have that option. I even erased the app and redownloaded the latest and nothing. They must have revised the unit since the initial batch and the old ones are stuck.

Turning off the LEDs is a key feature for me, if they didn't have that I wouldn't have got it in the first place. Our older AC units all have lights and numbers shown all the time and it is bothersome when trying to sleep.

Read these are hard to install. Any one speak to that?

I typically just being the window down on the unit, fitting it into the metal groove.

I think this is the exact same as the midea one. If you look at the manuals it looks like the midea as well. Plus it has the same CEER of 15 which is top of the line. I have the midea one and its been overall good, uses little power, but i did get recently get high pitch noise from a bearing I need to call in.

You need to put together a little metal rack that it comes with first to support the unit. Once that's in the window, you place this on top and then there's some additional insulation to put on the sides.

I really wish someone would make an inverter heat pump version of one of these! I have a 61 year old house that's probably a tear down soon, but have some rooms that could use supplemental heat. Minisplits are a hard pill to swallow when you know it's only a few years of your use to cover their cost. Since these could be moved or resold, much easier to justify.

Same here. I got the 8000btu from Midea's indiegogo. So it's one of the early batches. I can turn off the LED but not the beep. I ordered another one from Amazon for my in laws and can disable the LED and beep.

As an FYI, CR rates the 8000 btu Midea u shape (which could even be a patented design) an 87 out of 100 and it is the second highest rated a/c in their room a/c tests... only beat out by another larger 12k btu Midea scoring 90.

This "Danby" brand has to be the Costco specific version of the Midea. I'm guessing to keep other retailers happy, Midea probably off-branded this for Costco in order to prevent direct price competition with other retailers selling the Midea brand. Also, for those that do not know, Midea is based in China... not just made there, headquartered there.

imagine all the information that Midea & Danby is stealing with these smart units. Like the temps of your house!

You might try a firmware update? The 8000 BTU unit I got in April at Lowes has the ability to disable the beep in the app.
