Seconded on the for hardwood floor or very hard carpet only, I got one of these for my office which has semi-plush carpet and it's basically useless, it's not very thick and basically just gets immediate deep indentations from the wheels, I stopped using it pretty much immediately after I put it down.

dumb question: why do you need an office chair mat for a hardwood floor? isn't hardwood smooth enough for a wheeled chair to roll across?
If my office had hardwood, I'd get something like this to protect it from scratches.

I think also depends on the chair and its wheels. I had a cheap chair and the mat i have worked but did get indents but nothing bad. I got a Steelcase chair and now its basically cracking through the mad and small pvc pieces are popping out.

I'll have to get a heavy duty mat at this point for my carpet but I remember during the chair selection that I had an option to pick better wheels and I did not Frown.

You'll eventually wear through the finish of a hardwood or laminate floor.

Agreed, but be very careful if you live in a humid part of the country. I got one of these, and it protected the hardwood from scratches, but collected condensation under the plastic mat because it was completely flat so there was no way for evaporation to occur. Now the finish in that area is completely ruined, since it was for one of the kids and heaven forbid that they actually notice the drops of water under the mat.

Is this for low pile carpet, medium pile, high pile, or hardwood?

I have carpet in my home office and I ended up buying a sheet of plywood and cutting it to length instead. It's so much better than these protectors, I also changed out the chair wheels to a 'roller skate' type wheels where it's bigger and rolls around easier. I left my plywood plain but I've seen people covering it with laminate tiles or other decorative coverings. I guess you could even buy one of these 'floor protectors' and place it on top, but I like the plain look of the plywood. It makes for easy cleaning as well.

You're using wood as a mat? You must be a bazillionaire. What's next, $100 bills as TP? /s 😆

Prevent scratches would be my guess.

Yeah plywood isn't a good option with prices this high unless willing to pay for it.

They have 82 at my local Costco so I'll bite. Just called with item number and they looked up. I have really cheap flat carpet (no shag) and wheel marks easily are left in it with indentations. This should be a good option.

Used to have one of these type mats in the past, left a mark on the hardwood. Wont speak on this mat per se but for those of you looking for an option without the risks I recommend the roller blade wheels swapped on the chair itself. Never had an issue on my engineered hardwood, sometimes perhaps I move a bit too much. Have heard that some people might have an issue if theyre floor isnt flat.
