I'm on Verizon and have pretty much all the family on Verizon except the youngest who is on Tello. Night and day difference between the price but you also get what you pay for. The phones data in unreliable (as in doesn't work all the time), the coverage is decent but no where near what we get with Verizon. Overall I would recommend Tello for its price (its pretty much unbeatable) as long as you are not a heavy data user and don't have to have coverage everywhere. We brought our own phone, iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon) which worked fine but an AT&T unlocked iPhone 8 Plus did not work, when I first signed up for Tello it was using the sprint network, not sure if the newer phone will work now that sprint is merged with T-Mobile
I know tello uses T-mobile for their service. How good is their service. Last time when I used T-mobile (four years ago), I had to ditch it even though it was only $4 for unlimited minutes and data with the friends and family option. I did not get the signal at home or work and hence had to send back the sim.
Tello takes your expiring balance without warning.
They tell you AFTER they take it.
"By the way, your balance expired"
They could easily tell you before, just like other companies do.

you might as well get their sim on amazon, probably quicker. This is sweet deal, no jumping through hoops with groupon or whatever.

Do we still need to migrate to an unlocked device because of the T-Mobile merger? I made the switch already but my mom is still on a Sprint only phone.

If your mom's Sprint phone passes the compatibility check (https://tello.com/bring_your_own_phone), you should be good.

My Sprint LGV40 and Samsung S10e were both able to switch over to GSM. For the former though, I had to get them to do the UICC unlock. I didn't have to do that with the S10e. If you have been using Tello for a while, they should be able to do the SIM unlock.

Main issue I have had is using minutes while on wifi I thought. That isn't Tello's fault as they do now have calling over wifi, but the proper settings are now buried pretty deep in Android 11. We switched over to them from Mint hoping to get lower price for shorter about of time not needing as much talk/data is Mint offers. Free sim and get second month free was offer then, but this one can be better if you are staying with them for longer than 4 months of course.

What you are describing only happens to pay as you go. This is for a monthly plan so the scenario you described doesn't apply

In your case, all you have to do is call customer support to get the expired credit reinstated or refunded back to your original credit card. If they don't do it, open a credit card dispute

I tried to contact them multiple times, did not get any refund. They refunded my Paygo balance when they are not expired.

Would this $6 plan along with an old Tmobile phone work as a bridge to port from a landline to Tello to Google Voice, or would they stop you from porting if the service was brand new?
If this does not work, does anyone know of the current best deal to use to port a landline to Google Voice?

The AT&T 8 Plus didn't work because it came with an Intel modem that only worked on GSM-based networks (AT&T and TMo in the U.S.). The same phones sold for the Sprint and Verizon networks came with a Qualcomm modem that worked on all major networks. This is not an issue with the XS and later generations, which should work on all major networks as long as the phone is unlocked.
