I'm on the big island right now. Kona side is warm (upper 80's most days) and muggy, but there are a lot of great beaches. Sun is intense here as well, definitely need lots of sunscreen.

Hilo side is a bit cooler (lower 80's), and the beaches are mostly rocky, but they are worth visiting.

Rental cars are scarce there right now due to fleet sell offs that happened last year.
Prices can be ludicrous, people were resorting to renting uhauls just to get around.

Book your rental car before pulling the trigger on the flight.

Same here, booked a car 10 months ago and am hoping there are no issues at time of pickup
I prepaid my reservation with Avis and had no issue picking up. They didn't asked me for any code.

Waikoloa Village area is fantastic, lots of great beaches. Just a note, if you want to book any tours/excursions, book early (before you get here), that's a mistake I made.
Why book early? Cheaper or is everything booked by the time you show up? And any other advice on Waikoloa (which tower to stay at) and the Island itself would be much appreciated. Thanks!

All booked up. I booked an Airbnb since I was traveling with a family of 5. We loved Hapuna and Kua beaches. We are on the Hilo side now, heading to Volcano National Park tomorrow. Will let you know any other recommendations

I was reading some comments regarding the rental car shortage and WOW! Residents sure hate tourists even though they rely on tourism dollars. People should just boycott Hawaii and see how long they can survive without tourists. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Cancun is a much better deal. The people there welcome your business and are super friendly. Treat them with respect and they go above and beyond for you.
This is completely unfounded. I have vacationed 9 months in Hawaii over the last 4 years and have never had an interaction with a Native Local that was nothing less than positive. The California types that move to Hawaii is a different story, Karens all over the place. I have traveled all over the world and have never been held a gunpoint and robbed, except for Cancun. Cancun is more sketchy than moist third-world countries.

So how do I get the $277 price? Is it by using the Expiria Bargain Deal? It says $268 but it picks the flight for you automatically and is non-refundable. Anyone have experience with this?

YMMV literally anywhere. Anywhere you go you can have a bad day. I was in Hawaii last year, and I'm in a resort in Cancun right now. Keep your eyes and ears open, don't act like an entitled vacationer, and use common sense and you'll probably be fine in most places. Only place I've EVER had a bad day was a taxi driver in Istanbul that thought I was bad at math. Never had a bad experience in Hawaii or Cancun on any of my trips.

Yup, expect to drop $2-3k for the rental car if you stay more than a week.
Going to ship my vehicle to Hawaii, rent it out to tourists for a few years, then retire there

Yep. Been to hawaii a bunch of times and never had a bad experience with a local. I never go looking for trouble either though.

Since you own a time machine, can you please also bring back the prices of gasoline, milk, meat, and pretty much everything else from years ago? Thanks!
