Hmmmm..... This and that UGreen m.2 external USB-C enclosure that was on SD a week or so ago has got me thinking...

Or probably better, this Anker: LINK [amazon.com]

Buuuuut, then for that much I could probably get the 1TB Samsung T5 for about the same right?

Yea but you can sign up for their store card and they will remove tax. I did it a while ago and was able to check out right away.

Not a terrible deal on a solid SATA SSD. Unfortunately, unless you are stuck with a SATA only M.2 slot, there are MUCH better performance NVMe drives at similar prices these days.

This is obviously not NVMe. M.2 is a physical form factor, not an NVMe requirement. Crucial MX500 SSDs have always been SATA, regardless of physical form factor.

MX500 is M2.SATA, NOT M2. NVMe

Amazon does not price match. Confirmed with CS.
Best Buy no longer price matches with B&H. Found on Reddit.

This. People need to understand the difference between m.2 and m.2 NVMe. Like the poster said M.2 is a form factor. The most common bus is either SATA or PCIe. SSDs are so fast that the bottleneck for most SSDs is the SATA interface.

This is where PCIe comes in. M2 SSDs which uses The standard called NVMe allows them to communicate directly with the PCIe. And PCIe is many many times faster than SATA.

That being said, since most mobos either have only one or two slots for m.2, I would highly recommend you save it for a NVMe SSD and use the 6 or 8 SATA slots for regular SSDs. Or you can always buy a PCIe adapter for m.2
