Both have nasty endings. Handcuffs would be a non-violent approach.
The difference is, your wife doesn't let me use knives on her.

This… or baseball bat?
If you're thinking of self-defense, don't bring either to a gun fight.

Neither do I, but I like being a victim of violence even less. I'll stick with my 9mm. I carry a knife for possible close encounters with wildlife-mostly mountain lions. Hopefully I never tussle with a bear...not sure the gun and knife combined would stop one.

So I bought two knives from Smith & Wesson like a month back, of which I have never owned similar previously, and someone mentioned this. WTH? You can carry around a semi-automatic weapon, but you can't carry around knife. And, no, I wouldn't carry these knives around on my person normally - they are for the random time I need a knife for whatever. So do I have to worry if I have one on my body, outside, I'm going to get arrested or something?

And, more importantly, if they are illegal in my State, why would a company like Smith & Wesson ship to my state?
Yeah, CA law is really stupid at times. I need to worry about that too.

Basically you can't transport it, but if you really put in in your car, without a warrant, police cannot search your car.

For me, I mainly want to use it for camping, and I am hesitating whether I should bring it.

I don't want to sound like a knife snob here, I'm really not. I'm all about the best value for all the products I use. These knives are objectively pretty bad, most $8 knives aren't going to last. The sweet spot for knives is like $20-$50 for something that will really endure punishment. Look at Ganzo and pretty much anything from Power Cutlery's website. Also Civivi, CJRB, QSP, Kershaw, CRKT, Ruike, Cold Steel. Go for 14C28N, D2, 9Cr18MoV, 440C, or 154CM steel.

I have a general question. Someone I know ordered two spring assisted side opening knives from S&W. They also ordered a front exiting spring assist knife from Schrade. The order was in processing for about a month until an email to customer support mention ordering the two side opening spring assist from S&W without issue. Both Schrader and S&W are AOB products company. Does anyone think or have an idea if it was the ordering states legal status which is only no switchblades unless collecting for public display; even within ones own household.

Thanks OP.
This deal isn't dead, a bunch of these knives are still available AND free shipping. Picked up the "Partially Serrated" knife for the misc household toolboxes I'm making (going to the garage every time I need a small tool is a PITA)... picked up other items that were covered under the free shipping. Not sure if that is a Father's Day thing or if they normally have free shipping but that's pretty sweet! Thanks again OP!

Quote from EvilEwok :
The knives aren't necessarily illegal in the state, they may be illegal to carry "concealed". I think California it's 2" blades that are "automatic" are illegal. which is usually meant to apply to switchblades, but some assisted-open folding knives can count...depending on the LEO being asked
That's not how laws work.
Quote from Conformer101 :
Not being snarking, but how exactly do most people carry knives other than concealed? I mean, my two blades are not switchblades, they have the push down hinge release found on most carpet cutters. Of course if I'm carrying them outside my home, it's going in my pocket, not on my forehead.
I've only had one extreme (small in pocket) or the other (large, in sheath, on belt, with the tip of the sheath held close to my leg with a lace tied around my thigh)
I assume more than 2" should be in a sheath on belt so it's not canceled in pocket, but check your local laws... KNOW your laws because the cops normally don't.
