Since this promo is good until December, would be worthwhile to wait a bit and see if there'll be any HBO sales to stack this with, especially around Black Friday.

Here are the differences:
The Ad plan: commercials, no same-day releases, HD quality vs. 4k, and you're unable to download movies for offline viewing.

My Amex offers expiration is 12/14/21.

I and many of the folks I know have recently or are about to cancel Netflix after years of continuous subscription. More people are realizing it's no longer the value it once was.

How bad are the ads if one goes that route?
Wondering about this too. Anybody with experience? I read that HBO original content doesn't have ads, what about HBO Max originals?

its not worth more than $5, i have it for free because i use at&t,the screen size of any hbo max movies is so smaller than iphone mini, you will throw your phone or hit your tv 📺 with any rock because of screen size they made, they wanted users to watch in theaters so they wanted you guys to get irritated for hbo max and watch movies in theaters.
still wanna take risk then enjoy yourself
Or you can watch it on a large TV which cost less than flagship phones now...

Not being able to watch offline is a big negative I think for that $99/yr plan. Mean, you're still paying arm and a leg and not have that. Bad move I think.

Expected this is gonna happen! Cord cutting was a bogus , eventually you will end up with 2-3 streaming devices , 5-6 subscriptions ! Still one short to watch your favorite game, movie, live show or an episode ..

I enjoyed the 4 months subscription which comes up with cricket wireless deal. Watched WW the same day but not really sure the content quality was that 4k.. there's no selection unlike in youtube where you can set the quality and see the difference. So 4k in hbomax seems hd only to me.

plus like you know those same day movie releases? like Godzilla vs. Kong, Wonder Woman 1984, etc. and like upcoming Space Jam: A New Legacy (with LeBron James) is not on $99/year plan

You can look at other upcoming titles at https://www.hbomax.com/same-day-premieres , there is fourth Matrix movie releasing on December 22

The ads don't show up in the HBO shows. So anything that is HBO programming won't have ads. it's the stuff that's on Max but not on the linear HBO channel that will have ads.

Terrible marketing lol, but I am thinking I will just buy the ad free version cause of same day movie premiers, can stream it online for free, same day it releases. It is not there on ad based plan.

Honestly I'm ok with waiting on same day movie. You have to give up on something for a lower price Smilie

But wouldn't want to comprise on basic features. Not being able to watch offline on a plane or for kids, etc is unacceptable for me. All platforms have it at this price point.

I seen it yesterday I've been procrastinating. I was about to use the 5% on Discover and then seen the 25 back. Chase has a 15% on Disney also if anyone is interested in that. I went through the theater releases for the year to see if it's worth it so far I'm undecided.

So what exactly has ads? The movies? It just sounds so oxymoronic for HBO to have ads at all! Seriously $100 isn't enough?
