Kauai is one of the most amazing places on the planet. Unless you hate nature, of course. Then it's a nightmare. If you're into commercialism, head to Oahu. Kauai has a Walmart and that's about it, as far as retail goes. but hiking, SUP, surf, snorkeling.... amazing. also a bunch of dive restaurants that are great. I recommend Lihue/Kapaa as a place to stay since it's easy to go north or south from there.

Oh, and as a heads up -- if you go, watch out for chickens. and bring some trash to throw on Zuckerberg's land.

I work in Portland and live in Beaverton. Portland is trash now and has gotten this way since late 2016. Very few parts of the city are immune from the rampant homelessness and drug use. The riots and protests grew and grew and grew since Trump was elected and now is a badge of honor. In the central business district, there's literally not a single space that doesnt smell like urine. Its an incredible shame. That waterfront when I first moved here in late 2009 was absolutely incredible and may family would spend lots of time down there. Since 2017, nope. I used to bike to work and ride along the esplanade on the east side and the waterfront on the west side...not anymore. I used to run around the waterfront on my lunch breaks, too...gave that up in 2018 as you couldnt go more than 100ft without smelling marijuana, booze, and urine. The young homeless people high on drugs or drunk regularly accost people. And, if youre unlucky enough to be passing through while the professional protesters are out, well, don't back down. The Max is horrible to ride and has been since 2017, too. Filled with homeless people, drunks, and drug addicts, smell like cat urine all the time, they're gross to ride and that's if you can get on one at rush hour in Beaverton or later in Goose Hollow. Im not sure why youre pretending that Portland is something beautiful. Its one claim right now is being weird and thats it. There's literally nothing redeeming about it unless you think professional rioting is a sport and progressive liberal politics is entertainment.

Stay off the FOX News kids. I don't live in Portland, and never have, but I live just outside of Portland, and it's just as safe and pretty as always.
As far as the "deal goes"... There are always deals out of Seattle and LA, so PDX deserves a deal every now and then. This is not one though. A domestic flight on cheap carrier like Spirit is great when you can pack your stuff into a backpack, but a flight to Hawaii where you need to take luggage, paying that much each way per bag is ridiculous. I fly Alaska Air using their credit card so bags are free. Can you get deals like that using a 3rd party site like Expedia?

downtown pdx is a hot mess. believe the news. if you stay there late at night, you might just enjoy a nice bonfire or another business destroyed by antifa. and yes, i live in the portland area.

but as to the deal, this was the same rate i saw going to oahu. haven't been to kauai yet. any slickdeal hotels to stay?

My relatives live in Portland so we would visit every year. Downtown was beautiful, people friendly with boardwalk on the river, many squares to people watch and lots of fountains. Last time I went downtown was 2019. What a difference!! Filthy, smelled bad(you said why), and homeless everywhere that block you and hustle you for cash. Heartbreaking to us visitors. I can't imagine how bad the residents feel about all this.

This sums up my experience to the dot - moved here in 2011, always lived in NW Portland, absolutely loved it at first, but the huge and steady decline has been real and tangible. I really don't feel safe here anymore myself, let alone taking my kid to Downtown (we've been attacked by meth addicts several times in the past year), and there's frankly nothing to see and do there right now, compared to the vibrant place 10 years ago.
