I have a friend that was 20 weeks before she knew. She had very irregular periods but was skinny as a rail. She thought she was gaining weight because she'd just gotten married.

We let our families know on Xmas - at a big family gathering. It wasn't about upstaging anyone, but we knew everyone would be happy.
I'm not sure how far along you are but I think it's a good idea to wait until the first trimester is done, when the chances of M/C greatly drop. Some people are anxious to tell others before the pee hits the stick but I'd much rather hold in good news than have to distribute bad news if that's be the case.
I'm so sad today.
