If you're just starting out, you would need a water heater, and a water test kit as well.

Just use ordinary (screw in) LED bulbs! This looks like a much better kit than the TopFin one with the crappy mini led strip with like 4 LEDs only in it.

I would highly advise to avoid this kit due to the incandescent lighting. This will make it damn near impossible to reliably control tank temps.

How much would it cost to upgrade to led?

More than this kit for a full hood.

I have about seven 1 inches cichlid Juveniles.. They are happy there. It depends on the size of the fishes too

Also depends on how messy the fish is (most cichlids can do that). I would not keep 3 goldfish in a 10 gallon unless they are babies and not for too long.

Why would you need an air pump? I have a similar Aqueon kit (different hood) for my kids room with the same filter and it gives of more than enough flow for the fish.

I don't have the time or patience to create my own media for this like I did with my larger tanks, so I usually buy the filters in bulk from Pet Mountain when they go on sale.

I also wanted to add, that a 10 gallon requires much more maintenance than the larger tanks I've had. I almost wish I spent more and got something bigger for the kids room.

Air pump is not needed. Your filter can help with the flow.

Can get a nicrew brand on amazon for $20 or so, works fine for my planted 10 gallon.

Just switch the bulb to CFL. CFL bulb is better for plant growth. I have a 10 gallon walstad shrimp tank. No filter, lots of gubby grass and a heater set at 74F
