I have worn this watch (a solar powered G-Shock with radio time-keeping) everyday for well over ten years. It's a great watch and this is a good deal compared to what I originally paid.
Can someone explain to me why this so pricey? I feel like they were way less a couple of decades ago.
It's just a plain digital watch, right - other than being solar powered - is there anything specifically special about this thing?
Multi-band 6 radio control on this model is the key feature, along with Tough Solar, that differentiates this from a $40 DW-5600.
This is a good non-holiday price for this model. As others have noted, this model was on sale from several retailers (including Amazon) last holiday season for $70-80.

My guess is with the rise in popularity of smartwatches this has led to a more general awareness and appreciation of watches in general.
Normally a gshock like the DW5600 is a great value at ~$40 but this has the Atomic timekeeping with solar charging which makes it that much more reliable and worth it IMO

I bought a g-shock in 2012. I have worn it through drunken night hikes, bike crashes, fights, Disneyland, Disney World, conception 2x, birth 2x, engine swaps, masonry work, concrete, I have adhd and adjust the strap 20 times a day, I can wear it into any secured perimeter without having to check it. It looks 1 day old. I don't understand how there are no scratches or how the holes on the band are still all consistent. I don't like jewelry. I can make assumptions about the other guys wearing the subdued versions.
G-shock is the cheapest buy once cry once product.
I like old school things and I believe people are mindlessly adopting BS like "smart toothbrush" and "Smart refrigerators". The "internet of things" trinkets are robbing Mankind of it's simplicity. So I say this with all sincerity- this seems like a lot of money for a non-smartwatch.
I'm intrigued by it's simplicity but put off by it's price.

interesting points - probably still not for me - but good to know why it costs so much. Still won't do it

Best simple g shock out there for the price period. You get tough solar, atomic time(NEVER HAVE TO SET THE TIME even for daylight savings), and is rugged. I have the blacked out version of this watch, while it is hard to read the time I just use the back light

It's just a plain digital watch, right - other than being solar powered - is there anything specifically special about this thing?
