Harbor Freight B&M and online has their Apache 3800 cases on sale for $29.99. Seems that's the typical sale price every now and then. I had actually intended to use the 20% coupon to get one, but this works out nicely instead. It's a plastic hard case, IP65 watertight, with a customizable foam insert. It's big enough for your typical camera equipment, or for a few handguns and magazines, but I'm using it for an Oculus Quest 2. You could feasibly fit one into the smaller Apache 2800, but only with the stock strap or something about that size. If you've got an elite strap or a 3rd party equivalent, you'll likely need something this big.

I've got my mini 2 along with all the Go Fly accessories in it as well as power banks to charge while in the field with some room left over. Just spend some time being careful with the layout and you can fit quite a bit into the case. I also did the Plast-Dip thing afterwards to make sure the foam will last.

When all is said and done it probably cost close to a commercial case but I've got everything how I want it.

It will work but the foam probably isn't the right kind. Closed cell foam will work better, such as kaizen. Yes, it's more expensive but it's cleaner when you're dealing with wood dust and it will hold it's shape better over time.

Some people automatically down vote anything from Harbor Freight.
Ok, guess I must have done something wrong to warrant being downvoted almost immediately after posting a deal for the very first time. Don't suppose anyone could let me know what I did so I can try to avoid it in the future?

I don't know about the downvotes, but for me it seems to be the normal non-sale price.

I'd been looking at the case for the past two months for my Oculus and this was the first time it popped up on sale. Not sure how often they discount them.

Exactly, so not helpful for you, Darthwoo. I don't think it's a bad deal, even if it has been this price before.

FYI these cases are great. Harbor Freight gets you great prices on basically 80% of the higher scale product. Downsides to these cases, if you don't already know, are the latches and the foam. Latches are just subpar, but the foam is nowhere near the quality of the pelican/nanuk. If you won't be removing/replacing almost everyday, you don't need the quality of the overpriced stuff. Just be gentle and it'll last forever

Ive read that some people recommend plasti-dipping the foam after you plucked it to your desired use.

This guy talks about doing that, on how to apply, suggestions on cutting, etc.

Should work for whatever you're wanting to stencil or pluck for the foam. I have a few of these style cases but I found them less useful for firearms; I mean it looks cool but I find a good soft case w/ utility/mag pouches more practical. Perhaps if I was flying with them I'd find more use for these kind of cases. Makes sense for drone and camera setups though, and I've also used them for expensive testing tools around the farm, especially since dad is NOT careful with how he handles cases, so that works great.

Note: I can't speak to this particular model but I picked up some rando Chinese Pelican knock-off from some deal on Slickdeals years ago. Looks mostly the same.

How are they for protecting a DSLR camera and lenses in heat, say, if left in a hot car (not in direct sunlight just prolonged ambient heat over many hours/days)?

If you hear anything, please let me know. That's exactly what I was looking at this for. I found a legit Series X case, but they wanted $150
