This will easily work as a Plex Server. Now as far as 4K, you said "encoding", I assume you mean "transcoding". If thats what you mean, I don't really think this equipped to transcode 4K HDR files in real time, you need alot of CPU horsepower for that. I don't really believe most people transcode 4K HDR files currently, especially if you're talking full size UHD BluRays which can be upwards of 50-80GB per file. If you're Direct Playing these files then this should be more than enough. The only limitation at that point would be your connection speeds. As far as 1080p HD this should be perfectly fine for both DirectPlay and transcoding thanks to Intel Quick Sync support on the CPU. (You need a Plex Pass to take advantage of that though)

This is where you want to look: https://nascompares.com/2021/03/13/plex-synology-nas-performance-guide-2021-edition/
According to that, it _does_ support 4K SDR via hardware transcoding.

I replaced my DS218+ with the DS920+ last fall with the BF deal, been solid as a rock. I only added the extra 4GB of Synology RAM, didn't want to roll the dice on another brand. I put 4 x 6TB WD Red Pro drives in there, running RAID 5, so 18TB usable with 1 for redundancy. I also added 2 512GB nvme SSDs for caching, but Plex does not utilize that. I have the Plex Pass and hardware transcoding turned on, seems to handle everything I throw at it no issue. I use a Nvidia Shield Pro as the player and everything is awesome.

This makes me sad. Black Friday pricing, but with the cost of storage still being crazy I'm going to sit this one out. I have dreams of putting four 16TB drives in the 920+ but that won't happen anytime soon.

Been flip flopping from building a new media pc or just upgrading my NAS. Have a super slow old synology 2 bay. Is this a good price for the 920 or do you think it may drop more around black friday?
Been waiting for this since the last time the DS920+ hit this price last fall. It might not be the best time to get drives at its current price, but with Google Photo's free unlimited storage gone away recently, I need to put together a photo backup solution sooner rather than wait for good drive prices. The current FP sale on the WD drives is good enough for me to pair with this to get that setup up and running soon: https://slickdeals.net/f/15104428-western-digital-wd-red-plus-3-5-5400rpm-nas-internal-hard-drive-4tb-90-3tb-70-more-free-s-h?src=frontpage
I'm looking to add my own "cloud" for our pictures, mobile pictures, computer info (dabble on graphic design, data backup, have 2 kids 1 in HS, 1 in college would like for them to also have thier info backed up. I already have a ubiquiti nas for my cameras. I'm new and have been wanting to add a NAS for a long time. Recently lost a hard drive that had 1000s of pictures from years passes. Thank you.
