I replaced my DS218+ with the DS920+ last fall with the BF deal, been solid as a rock. I only added the extra 4GB of Synology RAM, didn't want to roll the dice on another brand. I put 4 x 6TB WD Red Pro drives in there, running RAID 5, so 18TB usable with 1 for redundancy. I also added 2 512GB nvme SSDs for caching, but Plex does not utilize that. I have the Plex Pass and hardware transcoding turned on, seems to handle everything I throw at it no issue. I use a Nvidia Shield Pro as the player and everything is awesome.

So I don't need a NAS bay immediately but I've been eye-ing at least a 4-bay one for the future. Is now a good time to get one of these or should I wait until the next generation and hopefully the prices of hard drives come down as well?

Right now I just run my plex server through my PC, is this a good alternative so I can run my server without issues and interruptions?

I have a 218j... It suits my needs, but it has always been a bit laggier than a ,218 play I had tried. It's openvpn is somewhat slow. It works, just... Slow.

Worth the upgrade?

Could be due to the pandemic. I think they had a good amount of sales last Black Friday/Christmas though?

I have a DS412+ running SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid)

Can I pop out my drives and migrate them into the 920?

Can the 920 run 4k Plex and does it have HW encoding?

This makes me sad. Black Friday pricing, but with the cost of storage still being crazy I'm going to sit this one out. I have dreams of putting four 16TB drives in the 920+ but that won't happen anytime soon.
HD's prices are not that bad. I picked up 2 WD 16tb red wd161kfgx for $190 each with coupon at my local MC.

Yeah, that is what I have been doing. I keep my Main PC on 24/7 so it makes sense for me to use PLEX server on my PC. My PC can transcode if I need to do that, but I don't transcode anything. I bought QNAP TS-230 for 129 dollars 6 months ago. And I keep it off most of the time, and just turn it on to backup files and to transfer media from NAS to my PC.

Ah ok, I don't got an immediate need for it, but as you mentioned, sales don't come often. I guess I have about 40some hours to decide whether or not to get it. Do you know if this model is due for an update soon?

It uses the Intel Celeron J4125 (quad core, vs dual core J4025 on the DS220+). That seems to be the SoC used on most of these newer mid-high range consumer NASes. It's based on Gemini Lake. Here's a list of what hardware encode/decode support it has.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Int...d_encoding

Looks like it supports all the major ones except AV1. Though I'm doubtful most people will store AV1-encoded video on their home NAS (I've played around with it and it currently takes like 5-10x longer to encode than HEVC h.265, which is already substantially slower than h.264.)

I did turn up this thread, which claims HW transcode on the 920+ can be spotty. But software transcode is fine.
https://forums.plex.tv/t/none-or-...920/609576

And this video test (I haven't had a chance to watch it all).

I'm starting to think we're best off just having the NAS act as file server, and use plex server on a beefier server (I have one for VMs) to transcode.
