I replaced my DS218+ with the DS920+ last fall with the BF deal, been solid as a rock. I only added the extra 4GB of Synology RAM, didn't want to roll the dice on another brand. I put 4 x 6TB WD Red Pro drives in there, running RAID 5, so 18TB usable with 1 for redundancy. I also added 2 512GB nvme SSDs for caching, but Plex does not utilize that. I have the Plex Pass and hardware transcoding turned on, seems to handle everything I throw at it no issue. I use a Nvidia Shield Pro as the player and everything is awesome.

HD's prices are not that bad. I picked up 2 WD 16tb red wd161kfgx for $190 each with coupon at my local MC.
How long ago and what location? There is a deal on 6TB WD Red for $130 IIRC but $11.875/TB is pretty bonkers.

This makes me sad. Black Friday pricing, but with the cost of storage still being crazy I'm going to sit this one out. I have dreams of putting four 16TB drives in the 920+ but that won't happen anytime soon.
Wouldn't you be able to start with a few drives now & expand as you go if you use SHR?

I have a DS412+ running SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid)

Can I pop out my drives and migrate them into the 920?

Can the 920 run 4k Plex and does it have HW encoding?
On Qnap, you can migrate like that (taking the drives out as is of the older unit and putting into the new one with all data/ raid/ IP addresses in tact). I believe Synology operates in a similar fashion

HDD migration allows you to migrate data by migrating HDDs from the source Synology NAS to the destination NAS directly. If you wish to keep using the same HDDs on the new Synology NAS, refer to HDD migration. However, this migration method has restrictions depending on the model and system requirements of both the source and destination Synology NA"

Right now I just run my plex server through my PC, is this a good alternative so I can run my server without issues and interruptions?

bought this, now to buy some disks. Any recommendations ?

I plan on using this primarily for back ups and maybe light docker / vm stuff. Should I upgrade the RAM ?

no it's not. it's been $550 since BF. it dropped to $440 today (as a prime day sale). the lightning deal makes it even cheaper.

I have a layman's question. The main difference I see between DS920+ vs DS1520+ is system memory 4GB vs 8GB. But then DS920+ allows us to add 4GB additional RAM. If I upgrade that, is it going to be same as 1520+ in terms of memory. Is it any different user added memory vs pre-installed memory comes in 1520+?

Also any pointers for 4GB memory where I can buy from?

Thanks

No, regular price is $549.99 but Prime day and other retailers have it on sale at $439.99.

Additional $22 off lightning deal was added 30 minutes ago or so.

920 has 4 bays/2 network ports

1520 has 5/4 network ports
