You have to be unsubscribed from game pass ultimate for a certain amount of months to get the $1 deal. Others have posted the exact amount of time away from GPU needed to be considered a "new subscriber," but I can't remember what it was. If you're not a current Game Pass Ultimate subscriber (even if it just expired yesterday), you can still do the Xbox Live Gold 1:1 conversion, which is a hell of a deal. You'll still have to pay the $15 for one month of GPU on top of the Gold. Use this guide if you're not aware of what it is:

It's a much better deal to just stack as many months of Gold (up to 3 years) for the 1:1 conversion. As long as your GPU has expired, you qualify.

That was for the EA play conversion for current subscribers. They announced they would be eventually be closing that before EA play even became a part of GPU. 1 year of EA Play used to convert to 4 months of GPU for current subscribers (making GPU basically 50% off). Now it's only 2 months.The 1:1 Gold conversion still works, as long as you're not a current subscribers (even if your subscription just expired yesterday.) I posted a link to the guide a few posts up for those that weren't aware of it.

I just did this. GPU expired last month. Just an FYI for anyone in the same boat, if you did the $1 conversion before you will probably have to pay $14.99 to covert this time but still cheaper than other options

My ultimate sub ended 6/7/21 and I immediately renewed for just the 12 months of gold and received this offer about a week after I renewed my gold sub. On top of that Microsoft gave me a $10 credit about a month ago and I just used $1 of that. My ultimate sub is now good till 9/22.

I could have maximized this offer by getting another 12 month sub first but I believe I'll be able to do this again.

I love the 1:1 conversion. Was able to snag 38 months for $101 or so. 36 months seems to be the max you can stack on there, but back in June they had the $1 upgrade + 2 additional months free. Game on, friends!
