Anyone here have experience switching from running a FreeNAS server (now TrueNAS) to using Synology NAS products? I've been using FreeNAS for over 4 years now and its been working 'fine'. However, I'm getting a little tired of dealing with the manual administrative experience from FreeNAS and am getting curious in the seamless experience Synology is supposed to provide. Also interest in the SHR mode that allows me to have varying capacity drives.

synology feels too bloated to me to be honest.

Also, you are paying a premium for this drive vs competition (asustor beats it performance wise, also has a 2x 2.5gbps lan ports )

New NAS user for 2 weeks now (DS1520+) and Synology DSM is seamless and very simple to set up. Also been extremely stable even when I pushed it (multiple file transfers, parity checking, setting up dockers). From what I've read, FreeNAS and Unraid are great for DIY but definitely not user friendly.

Went off the deep end with it though. Initially, it was supposed to be only my Plex server. Now im running Home Assistant and 10 other docker containers on it.

I have this and I love it. If you want to add more RAM, which is very easy to do, buy this and it will bring it to 20GB instead of the 4GB it comes with:

Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) DR X8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8266

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071KP8...UTF8&psc=1
There isn't a 8gb cap?

I ordered this exact memory for a laptop so I guess I could always pull it and test it when my 920+ arrives.

Coming from a DS411 that has run perfectly from day one should be a welcome upgrade.

Who dismisses a product because it is incredibly more feature rich than the competition?

It's like dismissing the release of the iPhone for having too many features over the T9 Simbian Nokia's.

Anyway, my DS412+ is almost 10 years old now, and I'm just proactively upgrading.... and the 920+ seems like a reasonable upgrade. The 412+ has been perfection though. So in for one. Now to find a 14tb HDD deal in the face of Chia miners.

Upgrading from a DS411 and that thing has been rock solid for a decade with no input from me.
