There is a chat button on the lower right hand side, choose price match in the drop down

They just shot me down and said their price is the best they can offer. Did you somehow get around that? If so, you lucked out.

Any 2 bday deals. Just a beginner, not sure about jumping in this deep $$$.

DS220+ is $227: https://www.amazon.com/Synology-B...087ZCBWFH/

If you have a Citi card, you can get $20 off. Chase might offer $10 or $20. YMMV

Is this good for google photos replacement? How is the mobile app for viewing your pics from anywhere similar to google photos? Can it be configured for multiple users to upload photos?

It says memory is expandable to 8GB, but I've seen people running it over 8GB, is that not the cap?

There is 4GB non-removable onboard. Officially you can add another 4GB card. Unofficially, I've seen reports of people putting as much as a 16GB card inside. It uses SO-DIMM memory. That being said, unless you're running a bunch of VMs or Docker containers, the 4GB that it comes with is fine. I have an extra 4GB in mine and run an Ubuntu VM with a bunch of stuff on it. Runs great and is quite stable.

I can shoot you my code to you, since I am price member, there is another 6% CC cash back to offset VA tax so bh really makes no difference to me with payboo card.

These are very power efficient. According to the specs it draws 32 watts when it is being accessed, about 9.7 watts in hibernation mode. This is with all the bays loaded with drives, if you had less drives, it would be even less.

you pay more for "feature rich" software, but worse hardware. So ya, its bloated coming from freenas. That is a reality, not an opinion. If you are a newbie, sure enjoy qnap/synology software "feature richness". That's your choice. It doesn't make it less bloaty though. You can put lipstick on a pig...but its still a pig.

If you want a decent upgrade, get something that actually has better hardware/better ports: Asustor AS5304T
FreeNAS is not relevant to the conversation.

You're comparing a custom built race car that requires an immense amount of knowledge, time, resources, troubleshooting, dedication, etc, to a production car with a warranty and service department.

Most people just want a QC tested point and click that just works, and don't want to have to learn Linux/networking/programming just to troubleshoot a simple plex issue. Personally, I know everything I need to know to run a FreeNAS setup, and I choose Synology because my time is valuable, and I'm willing to spend the extra to avoid just having to do it myself. Just like I also know how to build a car, but I sure as shit am just going to buy one off the lot instead of dropping a crate motor in a custom chassis.

But sure, FreeNAS is great *presuming you are technically savvy enough to handle that entire stack

Would be nice to have something like this, but I just can't justify it. Maybe if I worked with computers or some kind of data for a living... If anything, I'm thinking my raspberry pi 4 could probably just be used as a Plex server - hopefully with some kind of external HDD attached to it. Just probably couldn't transcode, but that's okay if I leave the files in the resolution that I will likely use them in
