A no name company? It sold to Sonova, a Swiss company thats been around since the 40's. They have nearly 4 times the revenue of Sennheiser. They are also a global leader in hearing aids and cochlear implants.

What is with all these people saying Sennheiser is like some trash sound company all of a sudden? They got bought by a well known international company known for hearing aids and have said they have no intention of changing anything about the current running of the headphone department. Even if they're lying, why would anyone assume the quality will go down or up for their headphones going forward? We have no evidence that their headphones will be better or worse in the future, literally none.

And to the person saying Sonova is a no-name brand, obviously you wouldn't know what it is because you probably don't use a hearing aid, they're very much known here in the U.S. too. Theres many valid reasons to be mad with capitalism, but headphone brand being bought and managed by a different audio brand isn't instant doomsday news for Sennheiser. Just buy or don't buy the $98 solid pair of headphones and move on lol. The time to protest isn't on a Slickdeals page with like 25 people seeing your war on the new Sennheiser

I think most people have moved onto wireless earphones and also no headphone jacks on phones any more. There are adapters but the wireless earphones have more or less taken over.

I got my wife a pair of these years ago and she used to use them until Airpods came out. And then she never touched her wired earphones and headphones again.
It's just a shame that pieces of junk like AirPods cost more than these.

Still like the HD58x for $170 over these

Easy to drive, no DAC/AMP needed for most Android phones, iPhone, Mac

PC and PS4 players may need a DAC/AMP but for general listening think the extra $70 gives you a better sound for your money

Read reviews to determine what is better
Agree. HD58X is probably the best deal in headphones if you don't mind spending more. It's currently $160. HD6XX is better, but costs $220 and requires an amp which would be another cost therefore I would say for people looking to get a little more serious with sound quality to go with these or the HD58X Jubilee.

how to get discover card discount
https://slickdeals.net/f/15078250-40-off-max-40-amazon-when-using-discover-points-ymmv

I only used $0.01 of my Discover points and it still worked. But it's only up to $40 cumulative, can be spread across multiple purchases but $40 total.

At $98.90, I'm so tempted to get one of these, but I still own my HD595's from 2011 which are still as reliable as the first day I bought them. Now I'm trying to justify buying these as a backup to those though, lol.
I also kinda wish these had detachable cords.

I would argue that it's too early to make a judgement(positive or negative) on the future of Sennheiser products with the consumer brand going under new ownership, however changing ownership has little to do with Capitalism, just ask all the companies that became state owned(changing hands in ownership) under Communism; not to mention in this case, the change of hands is happening under a Socialistic government.

Politics aside, it is natural to be skeptical of future products from a company that goes under new ownership or even management, history shows this. I will reiterate my first statement though, it's still too early to tell, but Sennheiser certainly had a good thing going, so let's just hope Sonova delivers and doesn't take liberties to screw it up.

It can still go either way, only time will tell.
What does being skeptical about future products even have to do with buying a several year old headphone for a good deal? And I am not doubting there are many negative examples of company being bought, then proceeding to become much lower quality, I just dont understand why someone is so aggressively pessimistic over a headphone company changing ownership. No one will ever take away your HD6xx or your HD800s or whatever headphones you enjoy, so why start complaining over something that might not even happen as if it will retroactively affect the joy youve found with headphones you already own. And here, in this Slickdeals void, of all places

There is also a coupon which will bring it down further $10 for first time Drop.com shoppers

I paid $170 - $10 first time shopper coupon/referral + $20 for accidental protection so like $190 before tax

At $150 with the coupon the HD58x is the best buy in headphones, as like you mentioned most audiophile headphones require at minimum $100-150 AMP, or DAC/AMP combo.

The portability factor of the HD58x is underrated as since you dont need a DAC/AMP you are not tethered to a powered amp that needs to be plugged into the wall

If anyone has a suggestion for some quality closed-back wired headphones, I'm all "ears" -- son doesn't like the sound leakage for the dorm room.

After a decade you actually "need" a reason to get something new? And only $100 for these?

Also, pretty sure the cord detaches. It has a separate 3.5mm cable that comes with it... that would be pointless if not, right?

For $100 Sennheiser HD280 Pro. For about $150 Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or AKG K371 are what comes to mind.

$100 is about the limit. I've been recommended the ATH-40s. Someone sent me a review that said they outperformed the 50s. But what do I know. My middle-aged ears are fine with $20 cans (as long as they're comfy).

Thanks and Repped!

These are more comfortable, lighter and have a wider more open soundstage. Definitely HD6XX for the hardcore musicphile/audiophile, but for entry audiophiles, general home use, gaming, movies, these can't be beat at this price IMHO

HD5X5 did not, but 5X8 and 5X9 series support detachable cables, and this comes with a long and a short (portable friendly) cable - makes a big difference

I have 5-7 year old 558s not really sure but its been a while. Will I see a nice noticeable improvement?
I've owned both and yes I think the difference is worth it. More comfortable, better headband, less clamping force, better bass and treble compared to 558

I understand and I agree. I have a few wireless earphones and they don't compare to the wired ones I have. And I have at least 10 different pairs. But in the end for 99% of the people convenience matters more than sound quality. Simple.
