I have a bunch throughout my house. Keep buying them on deals like this, although this is one of the best prices I have seen. I use them as speakers (set up in different groups) to listen to music. My kids play music on theirs constantly. We also use the broadcast function to notify each other of certain things - like when dinner is ready. I use them to control my lights, thermostat and garage door. We also set alarms, timers, and notifications on them as well as googling information. I have also used them to have a phone call. Come to think of it, I may have a problem🤪.

The one in my kitchen gets the most use. I play music while I cook, ask it to set timers for food in the oven, and help me with conversion for measurements.

I still have a bunch of these from previous $5.00 Walmart deals. They are fine for voice assistant but it would drive me insane listening to music on them for to long. Google handles all my stupid questions but I have Echos attached to all 4 of my home stereo systems for music duties. They both do a great job controlling all my smart bulbs and plugs. This is a decent deal but an easy pass for me because of how many unopened Minis I have still.

I see this is the 1st Gen (as are all of my other minis) - any reason why I should skip this and wait for deals on the 2nd Gen?
2nd gen has a different plug and can be mounted on the wall. 1st gen uses micro USB and people were using power supplies with it for phones that weren't capable of powering some of the music and performance was hampered which caused a lot of people to complain, so for the 2nd gen google changed the input power plug, and made notches on the underside so you can mount it. I heard the microphone may be a bit better on the 2nd gen also. Honestly I have both and can't tell the difference. I connect them all and stream Spotify on them and it works decently. I like listening to music, but not loud, and this allows me to listen everywhere in and around my house without forcing all my neighbors to listen too. Also, the sound quality is decent as long as the volume is at or below 50%.

The second generation one is WAY better. It is far faster and responsive to everything -- I rarely ever have had issues.

They have another microphone in the second gen.

I'd rather go with the refurb Lenovo clock sold on Wish.com. Purchased one for $16.xx. Like new condition in original retail box. Now it's $15.25.

Just bought 4. Primarily to use as an announce for kid but also to use for music in other areas of the house.

What are some uses you all have for this?
c
The things I've used it for or uses I know friends/family use it for:
  1. Controlling your smart devices (lights, switches, thermostat)
  2. Setting timers. This is useful for like if you are steeping tea or cooking. "ok google, set timer for 5 minutes."
  3. Setting alarms.
  4. Broadcasting. If you have one upstairs and one downstairs instead of screaming at each other you can say "ok google broadcast 'time for dinner.'" and it'll send your voice message to all the speakers. You can also tell it to broadcast to specific speakers if you want too. This is more if you have a big house.
  5. Asking what time it is. I know how stupid this sounds but but I use this A LOT and I set up an Apple version for my parents and my dad quickly found out how useful it is. Basically you wake up before you intend to but you don't know what time is it? You can roll over and look at your clock, find your phone, look at it, lift your arm up if you have a watch to look at your watch or simply... "Ok Google/Hey Siri, what time is it?".
  6. Playing music or sleep sounds (white noise, rain sounds, forest sounds).
  7. Asking quick questions like weather, sports scores.
  8. Doing personal things - you need to link your voice and your google account though. But you can ask what your calendar is like, have it read messages, send messages, etc.
  9. Doing a voice call.
They are actually pretty useful.

curious if anyone bought this by picking up from store inventory and checking out and got this price? wondering if it's worth a trip to the local lowes that had 63 of these it said up to the point the deal went dead to see if they still have any left even though website is simply saying not sold via their website any longer?

All gone. should have bought earlier. Wanting to replace our Echo Dots. Google seems to have more info and be a better product.
