It's an irrigation unit. It uses a waterstream to wash away dislodged plaque and food particles. It is not a replacement for flossing.

Plaque is a sticky film. It first has to be brushed or scraped off teeth, and then this unit can wash away the material.

For people with normal depth of gums, this may he entirely unnecessary. For those with periodontitis or wearing braces, these can be a very valuable addition to an oral hygiene routine.

Good idea
I used to add mouthwash.. then I cracked the handle part open and saw all the mold inside. Now I just use straight water and throw the handle in 1:1 water vinegar solution

As effective as flossing? Is it messy or Time consuming to maintain the unit?
I waterpik, floss, and waterpik again. Dentist keeps telling me "good job!"

I do something similar (granted, not 25% just a capful), but I've been rethinking it because I've read that mouthwash kills off both good and bacteria in your mouth and messes with the balance there. It does help your breath and feel good though!
Alcohol based mouthwash isn't good. You want something with fluoride and non alcoholic like ACT.

From my Dentist: Most people have poor technique and floss incorrectly (essentially just moving plaque from one crevice to the next). Floss is better if you do it correctly, waterpik doesn't require any technique so it is likely to be more effective for more people.

From me: I've owned a waterpik for about 5 years now and while I've been cavity prone my entire life, I have not had a single cavity since adding the waterpik to my regular routine. I still floss with regular floss 1-2 times a week and the waterpik 5-7 times a week. It's super easy to use, feels like a massage on the gums, and is great for oral hygiene.

this is an absolute necessity if you have braces or ever get braces.

it is still good without braces, it makes your mouth feel cleaner than just only flossing and brushing

No, not effective as flossing. It is not messed and little time to maintain the unit.
You kidding? It's way better than dry flossing.

They do have it. It's not from this company but they do make one that you attach to the shower head.

Watch out for the kiddos around this. Mine think its the best squirt gun ever.

Got it a few years ago and absolutely love it; although my dentist just told me last month it is not a complete substitute for flossing.

My dentist disagrees with you.

While Waterpic is awesome, it is not better then traditional flossing.

I love mine.

I add 75% water and 25% mouthwash for that extra degree of freshness.
Why would you waste mouthwash by splashing it on your teeth, when mouthwash is effective the longer you keep it in your mouth? The chemical reaction needs time to be effective to kill the bacteria.

The mouthwash actually helps to inhibit that mold - that's why I started using it in the first place. There are actually steps you need to take to prevent the mold, in addition to running vinegar through it once in a while.
